OK, so because we kept our *Spolier*Tour de France talk *Spoilers* thread clean (pun intended) I think we should have a drug scandle thread to balance out the universe.

Defend or accuse this thread is intended as a light hearted release to throw about conspiracy and speculation....

Have fun!

    Me first:

Lance Armstrong had chemo, right? Chemo destroys cells as in human cells. Shouldn't said therapy reduce the number of blood cells? Like red blood cells?

Red blood cells carry oxygen around the body. Aren't cancer patients provided with drugs to increase the blood cell count i.e. to increase their white and red blood cells? Due to their negative effects of their treatment?

Another question, if I use my asthma pump to open my lungs when commuting and SCRing (I no longer have asthma, I can blow the doctors airway pipe to 500) is that cheating?

Armstrong did indeed use EPO to boost his red blood cell count after his cancer treatment, as his red blood cell count was extremely low, that's been well documented, and somethig he openly admits. Did he extend the EPO use into his training and racing regime post cancer, and hide it behind the fact it was an essential drug for his recovery? I don't think we'll ever know the answer to that one.

What is certain is that riders used to sleep with alarms strapped to their chests and a set of rollers in their room. If their blood preasure dropped to low (due to excessive EPO abuse) then they'd have to jump on the bike to jump start their heart. Do we know who used to insist upon a set of rollers in their hotel room? I've not seen a list yet, but if one exists it would point the finger of suspicion all over the place.

Therefore, I'd like to say, they're all bleeding guilty until proven innocent.
  • Oh and by the way it's "scandal"...

  • Indurain was busted for something, Nandrolone I think, but it was OK as it was prescribed by his doctor, there was some speculation at the time as to whether it was prescribed retrospectively or not, we'll never know.

Didn't LA also use artificial blood in his recuperation?
For sure members of his team were dirty, Hera, Hamilton, Landis, but clearly LA is as pure as the driven snow, alledgedly :-)

EPO is a drug developed by Amgen for cancer patients. It isn't some mysterious treatment that popped into existence for the benefit of unscrupulous athletes. Ditto CERA.

Pettachi was recently suspended for taking 5 puffs, rather than the permitted 2, of an asthma medication (for which a specific exemption was required).

Assuming I get the *spirit* of the question right: It is not cheating if you get a TUE (Therapeutic Use Exemption).

I'd have thought that there is a difference in expressing something as a personal opinion than expressing something as fact.

Apart from s*x, p*rn and downloading/viewing videos, what the hell is the social interactive aspect of internet for if it can't be used for b*tching, pointing the finger and making wild accusations of famous people?

Cadel Evans - EPO to the eyeballs. What the hell was that about "physically he is fine but professional reasons he can't comment on his pour performance...."
