Specialized FS question

HELP!!!
I went to my local Evans yesterday, and they had a medium Specialized FSRxc Comp 2009 in for £997. I had a look round and a sit on it, and quite liked how it felt - and it also has front and rear shock lockouts which made it more appealing for XC and general use:
http://www.evanscycles.com/products/spe ... e-ec016447
so I had a look on the website this morning and the FSRxc Comp is sold out, but they have the Pitch FSR Comp instead for the same price. Would it be more prudent to get the Pitch for the same money, or are they two totally different machines? The Pitch seems a bit more 'harcore' being an all mountain bike, and I'm not sure if the shocks lock out, which might be a pain for general everday use?
http://www.evanscycles.com/products/spe ... e-ec001433
I wasn't really looking at spending anywhere near a grand, but I can't shake the idea of getting a FS bike out of my head and the FSRxc Comp felt good. Is it a decent bike for the money, or are there any other FS bargains for under a grand out there?
Really want to order a new bike this week and was pretty much set on getting the Focus Black Forest hardtail, but seeing some relatively affordable FS machines has given me second thoughts....

i love fs bikes and you are rght, there are some good ones available for a grand which wasnt true maybe as recently as a year ago!
the pitch is a very different mchine so you need to be honest about what kind of riding you are going to do. the pitch will be a couple of pounds heavier but the suspension system is basicly the same as the fsr.
the thing i like about longer travel trail bikes, or "all mountain bikes" is the confidence they give you. my enduro is a couple of pounds heavier than my stumpjumper but i basicly ride them for the same things. difference is that i tend to enjoy the enduro more cause even though it is heavier (still under 30 pounds though) it makes me feel loads more confident and i tackle riding i wouldnt normally.
sure, it is a bit more effort in the upwards direction but it is more than made up for in the downwards direction.0 -
Pitch is all mountain rather than 'trail' like the FSRxc. Sadly the Pitch Comp does not have lockouts on the shocks.
I have an 09 FSRxc and love it. Have a look at the "what bike and what size" sticky at the top of the Buying Advice forum for some good info.
Some alternatives to the FSRxc that have also reviewed well in the bike press are:
GT ID5 XCR (Halfords only).
Trek Fuel Ex.
Boardman FS.
Giant Trance X5.You only need two tools: WD40 and Duck Tape.
If it doesn't move and should, use the WD40.
If it shouldn't move and does, use the tape.0 -
well i've only recently started getting more into my riding, so for the moment it's still stuff like the red dalby trails and general XC stuff on the wolds, moors etc. the extra weight of the FS bikes is a bit of a concern, but hardly any websites list bike weights which is annoying! i've only ever ridden HT - which is why i was looking at the Black Forest as it seems a great bike for the money - just not sure if it's worth stretching the budget another £300 and trying a FS. lockout on the shock/fork is a must though I think...0

in that case, the FSRxc seems like the better bet for the kind of riding I do. Paul's Cycles have the Giant Trance X5 for £995

Think i'll head to York tomorrow and check out Halfords and Evans again, and also have a look in a couple of LBS0 -
@ Stone Rose,
From what you said in another of your posts I think think that you'd enjoy the HT more, its what you are used to and you said it more than copes with your riding style, I was in the same boat a little while back and after a long think about what I 'really' would be doing on the bike a HT was more than I needed.
Also dont forget its another £300, with that extra cash you could get some great upgrades if needed or accessories.
Now I know i'm not going to be too popular when I say this but its just my opinion, you have more to maintain on a full susser, so more servicing / replacement costs etc as you have more moving parts and another shock etc.... something to consider.
All in all, we are all different, but from all that i've seen you write, it seems that a HT is the way forward for you, and £300 in your pocket, still alot better than what you ride now.
All the best with the decision, I know from experience it drives you nutty weighing up all the options, I remember when I finally went into my LBS and paid for the frame on my HT custom build and it was like a huge weight off my shoulders 8)Orange 2010 P7 - Custom Build - My New Bikey Poos

yeah, i think you're probably right there - and I don't really have the extra money in my budget - but having seen the FSRxc yesterday it's planted that seed of "what if...?" in my mind!
but yeah, i'm going slowly mad scouring the web and shops trying to decide what i like and what I need - which is why I really want to sort it this week if I can!0 -

lol, I feel your pain
One thing that I noticed 'after' ordering my frame is that new bikes all look tempting and gorgeous in a 'ooooo a new shiney thing' way so my point is, is that when you do order a new bike you'll more than likey go 'ooooo, new & shiney' no matter what bike you order, so best to get one that a) Is affordable & b) Is suited to your riding style.

I had the same full-suss v HT debate myself when I was deciding on a new bike. All I'd say is that when you decide you'll be happy either way. Personally I went for the fulll-suss for performance going downhill and for comfort on the trail. You only need two tools: WD40 and Duck Tape.
If it doesn't move and should, use the WD40.
If it shouldn't move and does, use the tape.0 -
haha, yeah very true! every time i look at the Black Forest pic I think "ooo, nice and shiny" but i can't help feeling that a bit of rear travel would helo to smooth things out a bit on the rough stuff!0

i made the same choice as daz, and not regretted it for a second.0

out of interest, do either of you with the FSRxc know how heavy the bike is in standard form?0

hmm, the weight of the 2009 model XTC3 (the bike I have now, but in 2004 spec) is 29lb so not really that much different to what I'm used to

as a yorkshireman, i think price will win eventually - but not before I've been back to York tomorrow just for another look....0

The Spesh FSR XC is 31lbs with pedals.
If it is an XC full susser you are after, and you can get to the shop, this blows it away:

I can't get to Wigan unfortunately, and they only have large anyway. However, paul's do have it in medium for £978 also. you think that's a better much bet than the spesh (which I've just read some dodgy reviews of as it happens...)?

not that fussed about looks, but the low bottom bracket is a bit odd - more like a HT than a FS. but coming from a HT i guess it won't really be that much of an issue for me! i've found a main dealer in york so i'll drop by tomorrow on my tour of bike shops!0 -
