i ride Cwm Carn quite a lot and notice a lot of XC riders taking the free ride route at the top.
my days riding:
i decided to build my old hardtail up for a spin whilst i service my full sus.
the ride started out ok, until i got to the 4th decsent which is the rockiest of them all and my rear brake decided to fail, this led to a fall later in the ride when i went to grab back brake and it didnt work doh. (the brake pad actually dissintergrated)
anyway i did the 1st lap on my own before meeting some friends to do a lap with them.

so my 2nd lap: i got to the top today, had a little wait for my buddies to catch up. they take the route on the right because they cant jump properly and i take the free ride route.

2 guys went in front so i waited for a while, they didnt appear out on the track and had stopped by the tunnel so i went on assuming i would go past them. as they saw me coming they secided to go, this slightly pissed me off, but i thought OK they are a good 50 metres ahead no worries i shouldnt catch them up.

to my surprise i was slowly reeling them in, bearing in mind now i only have a front brake (a crappy tektro cable disc) and the guy slams on his brakes before the step up to step down, i locked up and almost went into the back of him and shoted whoooa

i thought he would get out the way but he just dordled along rolling over the jumps and i couldnt get passed him, cos its all loose rocks on the side.
so i slammed on the brakes let him go ahead so i could do the last few jumps.

i was watching him in the distance and he didnt take off a single jump, and completely wrecked my rythum and a lot of my fun, this really really annoyed me

why the hell do people ride the free ride section and not do the jumps, when there is a fun twisty section to ride instead?????????????????

if you are one of these riders: PLEASE GET OUT OF THE WAY IF SOMEONE COMES UP BEHIND YOU FASTER THAN YOUR GRANNY TRACTOR SPEED SO WE CAN ACTUALLY CLEAR THE JUMPS!!!!!!!!!!

5 minutes later my crank arm fell off-ISIS BB's are a complete waste of time, thankfully i have hollowtech on my other bike!

on a positive note i rode Coed y Brenin (the beast) and Llandegla last week, really enjoyed them despite my poor friends bike constantly breaking! :D the long decsents at coed y brenin are so much fun and it flows together so well.
Dont look at it-ride it! they are tools not f*cking ornaments

  • Hmm, never ridden it so can't vote - sounds like you had a bit of a nightmare all round though!

I don't know, maybe the guy's didn't know the route and were trying it for the first time?

I'm sure nobody meant to cheese you off.... deep breaths, calm yourself, there's alway's next time! :D

I've only been to Cwm carn once but the once you get to the top the xc route is REALLY badly signposted. it's signposted to the right but actually to the right is the freerid and almost back on yourself to the right is the xc loop. I ended up slamming the brakes on just before the ladder drops, maybe they just got on the wrong loop and didn't realise that there was another loop?

They should have let you through tho once you'd caught up with them and to then start just in front of you from stationary is pretty off.

Having said that, I've been on the recieveing end of some really impatient people. If someones faster and waiting behind me, they'll just have to wait until there's an obvious place for me stop and let them past. I've had people moan that i haven't let them past quickly enough, but the trails are there for everyone and it isn't fair to ask someone to instantly move aside.

I've even had someone have a go at me because i didn't let them past at an ideal place to let them through, my argument was if they'd bloody well made themselves known i would have, but i don't spend my entire ride concentrating on who/if someone is behind me and whether or not they're being held up!

    Sorry, that was my rant!

    sounds reasonable to me

but these guys were really taking the p*ss, i could have walked over the jumps faster, i think they need more and bolder signposts, the guys in front actaully went back up and road it again whilst i was stood there steaming with my crank arm in my hand lol, i must have looked like victor meldrew haha :o , yeah was a nightmare of a ride, the only thing that bike was good for is jumping, which was spoilt, think thats what annoyed me most.
ile have my ful sus back up and running again by the wkend, and aint gonna ever ride with an ISIS crank again!

the fun and twisty section sucks, the corners are flat and loose and that whole bit feels like a let down compared to the rest.

And if you can't just how do you think people learn mate? really...

BUT on your side if some one is faster and better than you on a trail get out of there way. there are no end of times on the final 2 decent sections I have had people charge to get ahead of me, then spend the rest of the time with me 3" of there rear tyre all the way down, because they will not move.

i quite enjoy the fun and twisty section (not as much as the jumps) i laways go that way if its wet or windy, if you drift far enough into the corners they are banked and catch you, the 1st few arent but as the trail goes on they become more banked, just have some faith in it catching you

and how do people learn-by actually trying the jumps at some sort of speed instead of rolling over them like a complete pussy!!!!!!!!!

P>S the last section is one of the most fun things i have ever ridden, its so nice to lean over and get some sideways drifting on down there, its hard work slowing down enough after the little drop at the end enough to get around the corner properly tho lol
yeah love that last section , its so fast :D
