Just wandering if anyone can point me in the right direction for some lubribant that I can use on the chain, and other moving parts of the bike that need a bit of lube, and something that will work well in the wet (with all the weather we have been having).

I dont mind having to get possibly 2 different lubes, if there isnt one out there that can do everything.

many thanks
Carl

  • For the chain I like finish line wet lube - the green one.

cheers, i was looking at that one, and also the dry lube.
Might be a silly question but what is the differnece and what different gains do they have.

Would I be able to use the drty lube elsewhere, like the seatpost. or would a different lube be best there. sorry bout the questions but pretty new to this

I use Finish Line Cross Country (for the chain) - green top - competent thick lube - I prefer it to the dry lubes - You should also use something like TF2 Teflon spray, to spray on all of your other non-chain bits.

I've always found White Lightning the best.

My mate is a team mechanic and they use Autoglym Engine cleaner to clean and degrease the chain (its mild) then wash off and dry. Then use Finish Line dry lube on the chain. GT85 on the jockeys etc. Worked well for me so far

Dunno about the marketing spiel, but in practice the difference seems to be that the dry stuff doesn't attract so much gunk to your chain but disappears in the wet, while the wet one will make your chain look a bit black and mucky but won't just vanish in the wet.

I very occasionally use the dry one on my road bike but the wet is the go 95% of the time in the UK. IMHO life is too short to try out loads of different ones and I think it'd be very difficult for real-world riders to come to any definintive conclusions anyway. The Finish Line stuff is pretty well regarded on here and a lot of other places and it's widely available.

For things like your seatpost you want grease rather than lube.

FWIW I use a wax lube(Rock & Roll) on the chain and Shimano Slippery Spit(the one that
looks like a hypodermic needle) on other pivot points(front & rear mech's., brake pivots, etc.) NO problems. Kind of like the Shimano thing. Really gets into tight places.

Finish Line Dry for when it's dry, Finish Line Wet for when it's wet.

In reality you don't want to be switching between the two, so I generally use dry for summer, Wet for Winter, although given this summer...

Downside of dry is that it will wash off in prolonged rain, down side of wet is that it attracts dirt.

Get a bottle of each and a tube of decent quality grease and you are all set.
