Anyone else watching the World Champs' this week. Ooh, it's good. I'll be glad when the suits have gone though. Just seen the 100m fly' with Phelps v Cavic, fantastic. Love it when the Brazilians win though - have you seen their supporters  Never seen such a fit looking crowd anywhere either.

I love swimming and did it competively when I was (much) younger.

I do not get this issue with the suits, and I definitely did not like Phelps having a go about them after he lost to someone wearing one. Afterall Phelps was one of the first to wear such a suite the RZR, or whatever it is called, and won how many (4?) gold medals did he win in Beijing.

Technology is technology, if you are going to scrap the suits you have to scrap all the records since they were used comptetively. But, as long as there is no meter then why should people not use the suits. They would need to follow FINA specs in terms of sizes etc but I say go for it, bring it on.

The new swimsuits help the swimmer float at the back end, so having a streamlined water position is no longer so important. This means that swimmers may be more tempted to resort to steroids, growth hormone, etc. Mind you, FINA don't seem to be particularly bothered about thus, seeing as they don't even do blood tests at the World Champs (?!?!??!).
  • As someone who competes at swimming I could go on and on about the suits, but the most compelling reason to get rid of them, to me, is that they are a complete pain in the ass, and totally unnecessary. Why have something that is so inconvenient when it isn't needed?

As for rules, swimmers are not permitted to use any device that enhances their speed, buoyancy or endurance. The suits clearly enhance all of these things, but we have for years had a quirk where it was ruled that swimwear is not a device, thus this rule does not apply. However the rule has recently been changed (in response to the current crisis) to make it clear that it also applies to swimwear, which surely was the original intention anyway. If somebody hadn't decided that swimwear isn't a device back around the year 2000, we wouldn't be in this current mess. I don't think they should do anything about the records because if anyone thinks it is only the current generation of suits that enhance performance they are badly deluded. The previous fabric suits greatly enhanced speed, buoyancy and endurance, you'd need to go a lot further back to find the "real" world records.

Anyway, I have enjoyed watching the World Champs despite the suits debacle, but would have enjoyed it more if people's times had been comparable in a historical context. As it is, we're left wondering just how good most of the swims really are.
  • I have to agree that it's been exciting and interesting to watch as a fair weather fan. The 100m butterfly yesterday was incredible, and it was one of the most exciting races in the Olympics swimming too.

Plus, that Pellegrini's pretty tasty too ;)

Good on the British team - a fantastic achievement whichever you look at it.

Surely all swin suits, even basic speedos, provide some degree of streamlining thus helping the swimmer, as do swim caps; the answer is obvious... all swimmers should swim in the buff and shave all over, that way it's wholly down to the swimmers ability!

    shave all over

lol. Surely you mean they should not shave all over to ensure it is kept completely natural and as far away as any technology as possible!!

Maybe, but imagine how clogged up the filters would get! Would certainly give an advantage to the less hirsute swimmer

"all swimmers should swim in the buff and shave all over"

    Apart from the Brazilians, obviously
