I got a free sample a few weeks ago (from their website). Seems to work but not sure how you tell a bad lube from a good lube? How does it fare in the rain?

I'm not sure now you tell either. I've used a variety of lubes(for no particular reason, except maybe price) and have never noticed anything except a bit more chain noise when I needed to re-lube. What is it that you are observing that leads you to believe that any one "lube" is any "better" than another? :? :?

It's shown as the 'ideal MTB chain lubricant'. Does that mean that it isn't the ideal road bike lubricant?

So what makes you think it's great lube if you have only started to use it? You're not giving it any time yet. Perhaps because C+ are rating it highly you think it's the bees knees.
