A BIG BELFAST "BOUT YE?!" TIL ALLYIZ!
Please help! Am seeking advice on upgrading the stocked PIKE 426 AIR U-TURNS on my '08 MARIN WOLFRIDGE...they've served me well as my riding has improved. However as I've upped my game (though not gettin much air yet) I increasingly feel that no matter how hard I pump them up, I'm diving through the travel far too easily on steep and knarly sections. I'm 6ft 4in and 14st (at my fittest). I want to stay with the Maxle system but ditch the air and am hovering between 2 good deals on new Rockshox ...'09 PIKE 454 u-turn coils (£350) though needing a spring upgrade (£40-£50)...and a set of '09 LYRIK u-turn coils(£525)...again prob needing a spring upgrade (can't find a price for this). Is there a big difference in performance, weight and stocked spring firmness? Are the Lyrik's overkill for my level? Any other suggestions welcomed.

What pressure and sag are you running?0
-
180psi and around 35mm sag"KEEP 'ER LIT N FILL YER BOOTS!"0

I'd try running less sag say 15-20% and using more compression damping to stop it diving in low speed situations.0
-
just checkd the settings there and I am at 180psi in both positiv & neg chambers and 25mm sag when fully open (around 15%)...despite a recent full service, the compression damping feels either fully open or locked without much inbetween...my height n weight defo hav sum bearing here. The 426's will find a happy home on the hardtail I'm set to build in the near future...I'm decided on giving coil-sprung a go...just unsure of which 2 go for...and really don't wana buy twice!"KEEP 'ER LIT N FILL YER BOOTS!"0

You'll certainly need the stiff spring. Or even X stiff.
What travel can the frame take?0 -
140-150mm...but reckon it'll handle 160mm if required...tiz bombproof
where can i find reccomended weight ratings for the stif n x-stiff springs?"KEEP 'ER LIT N FILL YER BOOTS!"0 -
Rockshox or TF Tuned.
But weight distribution has an effect on sag too, and of course your preference.
You could of course just take the air cartridge out and put in a spring.0 -
let us know if interested in selling the old ;-)0

you are setting the sag with you in the ridding attack position? I.E. on the pedals weight forward?"Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."
