fsa pig ball headset came in the post today (£8 from CRC :) ) and decided to fit it out of boredom.

my LBS is a bit useless and are always 'booked up' for several months forward so taking it there wont be happening, and i dont have any specialist tools.

i took the forks out, removed the old bearings and all that, but now i dont know what to do  . oops.

the top part of the headset seems too small for my headtube, not sure what i might be doing wrong, and i cant get the lower part of the old headset out of the headtube, it seems to be stuck. there is also a peice of the old headset stuck at the bottom of my steerer, which i need to replace with the FSA one.

anyone got any tips/instructions? pics available if needed.

    Park tools has a guide.

But have you bought the correct headset type for your frame? What frame is it?

i tried parktools but i didnt find it very helpful.

i realised my headtube isnt straight, it gets wider at the top and bottom.

so basically the cups wont stay in will they?

just phoned the bike shop, they cant take it until the 17th.

    Mnay headtubes are like that,

You may need a different sort of headset ie an internal zero stack type.

Park Tools shows evey measurement and installation step you need.

so ive probably bought the wrong one then  just as well it was only £8.

ill have another look around parktools

EDIT: yup ive bought the wrong one. i need a zero stack like you said, ive gone an hammered the FSA crown race down as well :(

aha but just had a random idea, could i cut down part of the lower cup to make it fit? not sure if that would work but its an idea :?

I am not sure what it takes.

I would contact Raleigh, or get the calipers out and measure it.

    What came off it?

got the calipers out and measured the top of the headtube.

    44m ID, 50mm OD

where do i measure for stack height?

You need a standard Zero Stack headset.

Have a look at the FSA Z headset.

As they are low stack, and the old one was, it will fit.

Get the proper tool! And you'll need to fit the new one correctly too.

i would but they are booked up months ahead. they arent the type to just whip out a tool for 5 seconds and knock out a cup or two on the day :(

I know the feeling mate, my LBS is always booked up.....

I need to send my frame off next week sometime, I will probably have to beg him to fit me in (should only take him half hour max)

try making your own press like this with a long bolt, nuts & washers

The home made presses are sh|te! I made one, but th is nothing o keep the press or the cups central to the frame.

They may work, but wasn't confident that pressing the cups in at odd angles wasn't going to damage the frame.
I just phoned around the LBSs until I found one that would do it (the same afternoon too). Only charged me a fiver :D
