What Front Mech Can I Use

Rite ive had a search on here and can find what i need so its time to ask im afraid.
The problem i have is i have a 04 Specialized Enduro S-Works with an XT front mech thats around the same age. The mech is rubbish (and thats being kind), its a nightmare to set up, not to efficient etc etc so i want to change it. I tried an XT FD-M770 top swing dual pulley on it but the problem i had with that was i couldn't adjust it due to the Allen key bolt that tightens the cable down (sorry dont know the correct terminology). The bolt was pretty much facing down hence me not being able to get an Allen key in to tighten it as it was against the frame.
I've also tried to look on Specialized website to have a look at the model number of an original mech with the possibility of trawling ebay to try and find one. The problem there lies with the fact that i cant view the 04 Enduro.
What i need to know is what can i use instead, i dont care whether its Shimanno or Sram, XT, XTR, LX, SLX etc i just need something thats going to work. Its the only part of my entire bike thats original apart from the frame that is.
Thanks

Is this the model?
http://www.specialized.com/gb/en/bc/SBCBkModel.jsp?arc=2004&spid=21111
It specifies:
Shimano M-570 LX, 34.9mm clamp, bottom pull
Looking at my 2009 fd-m770 xt, the cable bolt does point downwards and looking at the photo below, I guess that angles it into the pivot just behind the crank and in front of the back tyre.

I'll take a photo of an xt fd-m750 from 2006 when they were rounded silvery plastic.0 -
XT FD-M750 from 2006. Think this would be ok. I think this is a bottom route only, the top route being slightly different. Someone else will have to advise on XTRs!

Epic, thanks for the replies gentlemen.
gcranston you've hit the nail bang on the head. Thats the mech i got on there now. Is there a mech available at the moment from a web site of any LBS that would shock something i can use. I only want to have to trawl ebay looking for older 2nd hand parts if i cant get something new as it may take months and months
supersonic i've tried EVERY way possible, even a set of pliers' and still wont work. The gap isnt big enough to get the short end of an allen key in and is obstructed by the frame anyway so cant even get the longer part in. I even dried little sockets, nothing works.0 -

This is more the model as mine is the s-works its a different spec to the 1 you suggest, mine may well be http://www.specialized.com/gb/en/bc/SBC ... spid=21116
It suggests that it's a Shimano M-760 XT, 34.9mm clamp, bottom pull may be the one.0 -
I think the dual pull mechanism may be causing the conflict. As you say, just a bottom pull should solve it.0

Any idea's which one i could use?0

IYou'll have to look through the annals of Shimano!
I might have one myslef, I shall have a look.0 -
i've spent hours looking through Shimanno and Sram's websites and all the mech's they make now are dual pull like the 1 i tried and cant use due to the position of the cable screw. Looks like i'm not going to be able to just buy 1 off the shelf and have to resign myself to the fact i'm going to have to spent hours/days trawling fleabay, bugger.0

whats e-type, thought that was a Jag0

SRAM mechs are not necessarily dual pull. Their X9 front mech is bought as either a dedicated top or bottom pull unit. It'll be about equivalent to, if not slightly better than, a new XT mech too.0
