A quick scary moment

Riding home last night, I spotted a downhill lane (it bent around a corner) and decided to speed down it as much as the tight space would allow for.
It straightened out toward the end then I thought "That car looks in a bit of a weird position"
low and behold there was a set of steps so I had to slam the brakes on (front wheel hanging over), grab the bike with one hand and the railing with the other.
At that speed I'd have flown off and hit the car and it would probably have hurt.
