PUMPS! Blackburn Airstick 2Stage vs Lezyne Road Drive -??

Looking to get a pump for the road bike. It will be taken with me on rides and used in emergencies only - I have a track pump at home. I have narrowed it down to these two and was wondering if anyone has any direct experience of them? It seem quite hard to get any info for the Blackburn in particular.

They are both light (Blackburn <100g) and can both pump to my required 100psi. The Lezyne is well made and pretty, the Blackburn is cheaper and has dual high volume/high pressure functionality that might be useful for my 25mm tyres.

Thanks in advance for your help!

They'll both do the job, but the Lezyne is more than pretty - it's absolutely gorgeous (never thought I'd feel this way about a pump) :o

Lezyne pumps are very well made and the flexible connector avoids the problem of broken valves.

+1 for the Lezyne Road Drive. Gets to 100 really easily, 130 with a bit of effort, and the flexible hose is genius. I can't think of another pump that actually makes the bike look better when attached. Really well made and makes the Blackburn look like a bit of cheap plastic crap in comparison. It's a stunning piece of kit and I love mine.

Fair enough, but I think you are being a bit harsh on the Blackburn! It's a new model and looks different to their usual grey ones - comes with a lifetime warranty too. Overwhelming response seems to be pro Lezyne but I still haven't found a single person that has used the Blackburn yet!

Everytime I had to pump up tyre on the road, I ended up breaking the valve clean off. Poor technique, or brute strength, I don't know. Hugely frustrating though, and scary on long rides.

The Lezyne, with it's flexible hose, completely does away with this problem.

It's also a really beautiful bit of engineering, like a Leica camera or something.

A pump is not something I'd normally get excited about, but this is the only pump I'd even consider now.

I have a carbon blackburn airstick, errr, 1 I guess it must be.......

And I have used it at the roadside several times, and it has done an admiral job of getting my tyres, or companions tyres, up to around 100psi, takes a bit of graft but you can get there.

I myself have never bent a valve with it, but others who have used it have done so

I too am very tempted by the Lezyne, the seperate hose would make bending a valve an impossibility I would hope, and the build quality is meant to be phenomenal.

Leyzne - fantastic, very efficient pump.

    Well worth the cost.

I've not seen the Blackburn, but I'm very pleased with my Lezyne - its beautifully made, very efficient. I don't think you'll regret buying one.

The Lezyne is a lot better than a standard Blackburn Airstick - I've lent it two club mates both of whom have gone and bought one. Not to say the new Blackburn model isn't better but it'd have to be a big improvement on the standard Airstick.

it's a hard life if you don't weaken.

Ok looks like I will get the Lezyne then - buy cheap buy twice and all that. Any reason I should choose medium over large or vice versa?

Medium is good enough and fits your jersey pocket - if you are fitting it to the frame then a large may be better. One thing - I haven't used the bracket to fit it to the bottle cage - a mate who bought the large did say it didn't seem super secure - don't know what others think ?

It will be going on the frame - so I hope the bracket it secure! Cheapest I can find is for £26.99 from Wiggle, but that's only because I get a 10% discount there due to having bought so much stuff from them.

    Cheaper here:

Is the medium one 'big' enough, or maybe a better question is is the large one too big?

I've not had a problem with the bracket on mine and that was one thing that worried me when I got it as the pump is just held in the bracket with a bit of velcro. But it's very secure indeed, the pump doesn't move at all, so no rattling and no chance of it parting company with the bike.

Ordered the large from Wiggle (even though not in stock) as I needed to get a couple of other things. Waiting with baited breath to see just how sexy a pump can be.

My Blackburn Airstick seized up due to water seeping in on to the inner rod which was exposed due to the folding handle. I bought it about 3 years ago so they may have changed the design since then.
