Transfil Mudlovers (question mainly for alfablue)
What ho, old bean.
I've generally been pretty happy with the Mudlovers you recommended but I'm afraid I discovered a problem the other day and I'm wondering if you've got any idea what caused it. It was probably something I did wrong on installation, I expect.
Basically, I was trying to index the rear mech and having a nightmare, it was either working fine for the upshifts or working fine for the downshifts but not both of them. I spent ages trying different things but to cut a long story short the problem turned out to be that the sealed lining of the cable had somehow got pulled part-way into the lever assembly and had got chewed up and was causing the cable not to release properly on every stop.
The steel inner had also got a little chewed in the same spot (that's actually what alerted me to the problem at first) so I replaced the inner and the rear loop of outer and at the moment I just have a normal, non-sealed cable for the rear mech, which is working fine for now.
Anyway, as I said my initial suspicions are that I did something wrong when I installed the cable set, so can you think of any obvious errors I might've made?
Typing this thread has just made me realise it might be a good idea to check the front mech cable for the same problem. Will take a look at lunchtime. Although front mechs use so much more force/cable that it's unlikely to be a problem even if it's suffered the same issue.

So... Any takers for a sweepstake on where alfa's gone on holiday, then?
Looks like I'll be bumping this thread in a week or two. Talk among yourselves until then.0 -
One thought from what you describe may be how you've clamped-down the end of the cable. It should be routed as shown in the upper picture here: If it's routed incorrectly (as in the lower pic) this can often cause poor indexing.
A good "how-to" on the Park Tools website: http://www.parktool.com/repair/readhowto.asp?id=64Cycling weakly0 -
Ah, Jamey, not on holiday yet, just left my laptop alone for the day (holiday on wednesday, Netherlands ).
Its now a long time since I fitted the mudlovers, but I think, at the shifter end, I fitted it so the liner stays inside the cable ferrule (water ingress is much more of a problem towards the bottom of the bike and the mech ends, rather than the shifter ends), or at least check it doesn't wrap around with the cable inside the shifters when going through the range of gears (suggest trying this out before final fitting to the mech). At the mech end I see about 5 mm poking out of the cable stop. I've not had to touch my gear cables for a long time now! 8)0 -
Skydog - already had that problem once before so I'm careful about that. Thanks for the advice but it was definitely caused by the problem I described.
Alfa - cheers, it does make perfect sense to keep the liner inside the ferrule at the lever and I'd like to think that's what I did when I fitted them but I honestly can't remember.
Might give it one more go, making sure to do it that way and if it still happens I'll consider going back to normal cables and just changing them often on the rear mech.
Cheers dude, have a good holiday.0
