  • assisted GPS uses radio to make the positioning more accurate. On phones I think the phone signal itself is used to make it more accurate, so it's less accurate when out of signal

    I believe one benefit is A-GPS uses the phone signal* to acquire the initial sat data quickly which reduces the time to get a good fix. I'm not sure but it might be able to use cell data for positioning too. Don't know. I think it's supposed to make positioning in cities with big buildings easier too.

    * - might use your phone's data connection, thus costs money, but not sure. I think if it's the case you can probably disable this and you get plain GPS rather than A-GPS.
