An SS question which has probably been asked lots before

Dear kind people,

I am in the middle of converting a crappy old road bike into a single speed effort. However, I think I am a bit out of my depth in some regards (not surprising to people who know me).

My question is: Do I need a special type of rear wheel and hub or can I just remove all the cogs/sprockets that are there on my current wheel and insert spacers in their place, along with the single sprocket I need?

Ta.

If the crappy road bike has a cassette rear wheel then you can get away with buying a sprocket and spacer kit, if the wheel has a screw-on freewheel, then in theory all you need to do is take the freewheel off but the chainline will be very wrong. You can buy 130OLD SS hubs and rebuild the wheel.
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.

Many thanks, redvee. I currently have a cassette on the wheel. Sounds like I'm all set then.
