Right - retro restoration has turned into a pickle - gonna be more like a hack-bike!
Frame is sound, no dents or dings just loads of scratches really - can either touch them up or leave them be (I am more inclined to do the later TBH)
Forks now work - had no air in them!!! They are 1995 Marz XCR - have cleaned them up and they look OK now, cleaned all the shit out of them but to be honest they will probably need a service!
Wheels - XT front hub on a Mavic rim (black) / Parallax rear hub on silver mavic rim. XT skewers (enclosed cam) on both wheels
Cassette (8 speed) is stuck on rear wheel (see Work and tech)
Stem is rusted and the bolts are beyond repair / new quill stem can be obtained from ebay though - so no problem there
Bars are light as you like and are staying, although one of the bolts that is on the gripshift has rusetd and rounded off, so need to sort that out
Seatpost and saddle had to be binned
Chainset is OK, apart from rusted chainring bolts - Square taper BB is still running smooth after 13 years!!!
Ritchey cantilever brakes are fine, took them off, cleaned them and they have some up like new! Just need new cables
So, a fair bit done, but by no means there yet / this will be a commuter/pub/hack bike so not going to spend too much money on it by any means!
All I need is:
seatpost (27mm) and seatclamp
Quill stem
saddle (which a mate has sorted for me)
38t front ring (for singlespeed) and chainring bolts
SS convert kit
Chain tensioner
chain
pedals
He had not left it in his shed (my mate) as he said before, it's been under a tarpaulin. Im surprised it looks this good if Im honest!
Now I am knackered - have been fettling since 5:45!

Thats some good work.
Glad you kept the zocchis - they are a nice feature. Now that we are strong ought to bear the infirmities of the weak and not to please ourselves. ROMANS 15:10 -

I'll hold you to that
I forget how easy HTII are to fit.. hence not having any other crank tools!0 -
update, not as bad as I thought.
Bike is looking great (for it's age), thouroughly cleaned it, polished and GT85'd the frame, wheels looklike new (quite impressed with myself actually lol) and they are true still.
Stripped, cleaned and reassembled the mechs (XT rear, LX front) and they look like they have just been bought!!! They are 8-speed so now just trying to find some shifters to go with them.
I was going to go SS with this build but it would cost more believe it or not so shall run it geared!
So, now I just need:
8 speed shifters
27mm seatpost (in silver)
saddle (want something retro-ish)
Quill stem
chain
pedals and I pretty much think that's it!
OH, those cantilever brakes are a BITCH to set up!!!!0 -

How about some Magura HS33 Hydro rim squeezers to add a little modern but retro touch to the SS?0
