Llandegla ...goodness and badness

Like a few others it seems I rid myself of my trail centre virginity yesterday with a trip to Llandegla. We stuck to the reds and blacks and loved every minute of it, especially the drop-offs, jump sections and super fast berms. Unfortunately my front wheel washed out half way through jj's jumps and i managed to break my arm in 3 places. :(

Inspite of this I'm still buzzing about all of the good stuff and can't wait to get back on in a few weeks. Not the best timing really as I'd planned a full summer of riding - being a teacher and having 6 weeks off does have its advantages. , supposedly!

I've got to say a big thanks to one of the instructors, Pete, who was on hand to strap me up and show us the quickest way to walk down...still took forever though

Need to find a 1 handed hobby for the rest of the holidays now.

Kudos for not letting it put you off. Llandgela is a good place to lose your cherry (or something), once you're happy with it try some of the others, just don't expect them to be the same.

At least you avoided that awful boardwalk section though
It's easier to ask for forgiveness than for permission.

    I've bought a new bike....ouch - result
    Can I buy a new bike?...No - no result

Hmmm...definitley did the short boardwalk section with the steep ending...did it twice as we followed the trail back up to re-do a setion of black. I hate heights but as i was leading out i had to go for it....or is there another section i missed? They didn't have any maps when we went so i'm not exactly sure whete we were/what we did. Interestingly the doc reckons my body has a difficulty in absorbing calcium into my bones which may account for the number of breaks i've had since my early 20s. Apparently vitamin D is the way forward.

Do you mean the really bumpy bit made of little logs? I really don't like it, just seems absolutely pointless!

And to the OP, get well soon! Even though it's not technically that difficult I sometimes feel closer to doing myself an injury at Llandegla than other places just because of the speed it encourages you to hoon round at.

On Thursday I went to a trail centre for the first time (although I went to Innerleithen years ago) at Glentress and I went round fine, best riding ive ever done. Then we decide to hit the skills bit....I had a feeling it was going to go wrong. Wet wood....don't try and bunny hop onto it. Luckily I came away with no breaks but It was pretty sore.

Anyway, Im feeling your attitude cause im exactly the same. Havent been able to stop thinking about spooky wood

Thanks for the words of support guys. My new bike should be arriving next week thanks to cyclescheme so having that staring back at me in my cast should spur me on a bit more.

Utterly pointless? Have you seen the condition of the ground underneath it?

Anyway it isn't pointless if you can ride it smoothly, its just another challenge. I seriously think some posters on this forum deserve to be locked in the roadie section.

I agree, I think it`s quite a useful feature. Went round Llandegla yesterday morning for the first time since xmas, whilst I was a bit miffed about the felled section after the jumps, there seems to be lots of new building going on. The new section just before the boardwalk looks very interesting with a rather large rock feature and the pump track is also looking good.

Anyone know when the new bits are open?

We went to Llandegla this morning for the 1st time in ages and I was impressed I really enjoyed the newly deforested section. I thought I had got lost at 1st or was on a new section it felt a little bit like Penmachno.

Some of the new bits look like they could be fun think I might book a couple of days midweek when the schools have gone back and give them a good seeing to.

A bit narked at the state of some of the berms on the Black runs though why the hell do people have to drag there back brakes round a corner do your braking before the bend and then power round a corner :x you used to be able to fly round them berms almost horizontal now its almost like picking a line through a rock garden and you lose all that lovely speed.

They had a BBQ going at the caff and we stuffed our faces with sausage barms and piles of salad for £4 ommnomnomyumyumnomommnom

When I bust myself up, I take up painting and reading - things I don't do as much as I used to because I am normally riding/maintaining/building/selling/talking about BIKES.

Another ambulance up there today, that's one every weekend for about the last 4 or 5 weeks, recon I'd only seen a couple up there last year.

Today's was a face plant, broken cheek bone and lots of blood - I think it was quite near the start as well - if this carries on they'll have health and safety after them I'm sure!!!

Always wear body armour myself, I was going to get some of those undershorts with padding in the hips as that's what seemes to get most abuse, fell off in January and it's still giving me trouble (maybe I'm just getting old!).

NOT a criticism of the OP either, I hope your out again soon! I just always think I'm one ride away from a big accident - I've had a few, but touch wood nothing serious yet and I don't feel very confident if I'm not wearing any now, not sure it would have helped you anyway!

    EDIT-
I knew I shouldn't have posted this, my son who has just been to Llandegla with me has tripped up outside, he's now got a bump the size of a golf ball on his forehead and is sitting here with a bag of fronzen pea's on it!!!

Funnily enough since the accident I've decided to invest in a few bits of armour. I've read enough stories on here to realise that some pretty bad sht can happen any time and any place.

I have been looking for some kind of wrist protection but all the mtb stuff seems fairly lightweight compared to what I used when i was snowboarding. I'm going to dig them out and see if they can be modified so that they won't get in the way. I also think quality some elbow action might be needed if I'm going to have to try and stop landing on my out-stretched wrists. I've also gone for some Kyle Strair knee pads (not that they would have saved the arm  )

I'm now pondering whether a 661 pressure/assault suit would be over the top when most of my riding isn't at trail centres.
