Exploding Tyre and Narrow Escape!

Any one ever had a tubeless tyre explode on them before?

11072009035.jpg

Had this happen recently doing about 20mph on a nice flat gravel track. Heard a bang, felt sealant splatter my legs (and the riders behind me  ), to look down and see my tyre off the rim. Somehow managed not to lose control and fook off, pulled over and had a look to find a 1" split, smack bang in the middle of the tread (was expecting it to have been the sidewall that went :? ).

Was really lucky for it to have gone when it did as the day before we'd hit a top speed of 43mph down a chuffing great hill in the Lakes  Had it happened then, i doubt there'd be much left of me!

Funnily enough, a patch wouldn't fix it :(

I've been fortunate - touch wood - that I've never had a major equipment failure happen to me, but when I'm doing a fast descent there is that niggling doubt that if something were to break it's going to hurt in a big way.

Narrow escape for you there, I think. :|

Indeed! To say i was nipping up a bit on the downhills after that is a bit of an understatement :o

Right by where it exploded, there was a frayed section which i think must have been a weak section/production flaw. i would have sent it back as i reckon it was faulty, but my mate kindly binned it somewhere in the lake district.

It's a Spesh 2bliss The Captain S Works. Lucky for me, my mate runs the same tyres and had the forethought to bring along a spare :D

Same thing would have happened with a tube setup. If the tyre split like that the tube would have gone straight through and gone bang, just less sealent mess.

Sounds like a faulty or damaged tyre, lucky escape though.
It's easier to ask for forgiveness than for permission.

    I've bought a new bike....ouch - result
    Can I buy a new bike?...No - no result

    Yeah, i think you're right.

Do you think there's any chance it was a sealant reaction?

I don't think so. When i looked at the hole, the inside was frayed by where it went, so i think there was a weak spot/flaw in the tyre. Probably a manufacturing fault. Couple that to the fact that they had had a bit of a beating the day before and were a fairly high pressure (45-50psi) as we'd been riding mainly roads.

Could also have been damage from a pervious ride that finally gave out at that point.
Running tubeless myself I notice some tyre manufactures have a disclaimer if sealant is used in the tyre or if the sealant is not theirs.

My guess is that it was a flaw that was always there - it was just a matter of time - and the combination of high miles and fast speeds the day before were the final straws! I've replaced it with an identical tyre so it's obviously not put me off

Not had it happen on my tubeless yet, I have had a high-speed blow out with tubes though resulting in the tyre coming off the rim (front) and the inner tube wrapping around the rotor so I wouldn't say it's a concern just with tubeless :p

I had a pair of 2BLISS Captains and they were awful. They leaked through the wall and Noah's Ark said it was a 'feature of the tire' and that I should use sealant. I had loads in there.

As I'm 16 stone and they are made of rice paper, they were not too bad although deformed while cornering.

I had 2 Fire XC's blow on me and a Hutchinson Scorpion blast off at deform while pumping. Still love UST though. It's the future.

This was the only problem i've had with them. They leak a tiny amount of sealant through the sidewalls but it isn't enough to effect the inflation of the tyre - i hardly ever need to put air in them. I love 'em 8)

I think you're lucky as mine were down to 20psi from about 35 - 40 in 3 hours.

However, I'd never be without a pair of Crossmax.

I left mine laying on their side for a couple of hours after initially installing them, and then flipped it over to the other side for a couple, to get the sealant all round the sidewalls. Then took them for a good spin to get the sealant flowing about. Can't remember where i read that tip, but it seems to have worked for me :D

    Hi,

What sealant are you using? I use one from an agricultural store call Linseal (I think) Quite thick, but on inspection of my Trailrakers, I had 12 punctures and was not aware in ther slightest last winter.

I'm using Stan's No Tubes - quite runny! The tyre that exploded had about 9 thorns poking through the tread that would have been punctures were i running tubes, so i'm confident it's doing it's job. If only it sealed 1inch splits...
