...if it wasn't a team event?

I guess Bertie would be in yellow, but the rest of the GC?

And would Cav have four stages under his belt?

    Actually the riders would still collaborate. Imagine if you had a slim chance of winning on a flat stage, if a sprinter came along and said "pull back that break and I'll give you n% of my prize money" then you'd soon form an alliance.

    This is exactly what happens in amateur races when there are small teams but big money at stake, people join together in unwritten alliances.

    This is what happened in the early days of the Tour. The organisers were very much against the formation of teams, but could do nothing to stop riders forming informal alliances.
