Puzzled by track pump

Hi, I recently bought a Beto Aluminium Track Pump which has been working fine on my presta valves. Then I tried it on a tube with a longer presta valve, and I just can't get a good fit on it. The air just leaks out, I can't get any pressure on it at all. I'm fitting the valve as far as I can into the socket, not
A CO2 pump works fine on it, but that's going to be an expensive way to top up the front tyre every time I go for a ride. Am I being stupid? (It has been known) Is there a magic technique?
It's doing my head in, any help would be brilliant...

Are you pushing it on too far? That will cause some pumps to not work. I didn't quite understand your "not".0 -
Don't push it too far on to the valve, about 1cm is enough then when you move the lock lever it should depress the end of the valve, when you release the lock lever the valve should close. Any air leaking then is just pressure built up in the pump and hoseHe is not the messiah, he is a very naughty boy !!0

Is the longer presta valve still a threaded one like the shorter one? Or is it smooth like the halfords long presta valves?
My Joeblow pump just doesn't get on well with the smooth valves, (just a lack of friction), it tends to blow off at about 90psi. I just don't buy the halfords tubes anymore.0 -
Thanks for your replies... yes it's a threaded valve, I'll try your advice about putting it on about 1cm. When I unscrew the end of the valve, how far should I unscrew it? Is it possible to unscrew it too far/not far enough?Knees tracking forward, elbows soft, cadenc- ooo, bunnies!0

I have a track pump and find it fit's some valves better than others. I've had the same problem as you on some and you've just got to try different techniques. Frustrating I know.0
