In you oppinion, when does it become less viable to repair and upgrade a mountain bike and when you should go out and buy a new bike. Not ridden my mountain bike for some months (GT avalanche pro) as I have been using a road bike every day. It's gone a bit wayward/ unclean and some parts are rotten. Is it worth some new parts or time for spending out on something new for about 600 pounds. What do you get for your money nower days?

welcome to the forums.
When you say rotten, how rotten are we talking?
What sort of state is the frame in?
Which parts would you be looking to replace?0 -

Firstly, yes i live on the isle of wight.
Frames good, Wheels are good. Probably need new tyres and tube, new chain and sprocket set. Got hayes Hydraulic disc brakes that I can't bleed and keep seizing in the winter with all the salt on the roads, thought about getting some hope brakes. I could probably do with some up to date front sus forks. It's a hard tail so no trouble at the back.0 -
I'm a big fan of upgrading because I'm really anal about the details on my bike; it's such a personal thing. It's not necessarily the wisest way to go though & generally will end up costing more unless you're very smart about it.
Can't imagine there'd be much up with the GT that a really good clean & lube session wouldn't fix though - I pulled a bike out the back of my dad's garage that'd been there 10years or more & it's on the road running sweetly for a grand total of £6 (rear innertube plus a spare!) and a couple of afternoons.
I've heard very good things about that bike, think it may be time for you to show it some love!WTD:
