X7 shifter, X9 Rear Mech issues.

Well I guess it could be a number of things but heres the symptoms.

Basically all of the rear cassette cogs are out of sync with the shifters. Wen it says its on 1 its on 2, when it says its on 2 its on 3 etc etc until it doesn't even make it to the smallest cog. although the shifter is on 9.

The chain shifts fine until it can't make the final cog and the gear wire goes real slack. I can manually force the rear mech to contract by hand and it shifts into the final cog.

All of this is in the middle front ring btw.
I had an off today, may have bashed it but there doesnt seem to be any damage.

Knackered cables. Get some new uns, or clean and grease the old ones!

That simple? (well annoyingly time consuming actually)

Only had the bike since January and its not been used lots and lots.....god dammit. :?

You are doing well if had it that long and never serviced the gears!

The gunk in the cables stops the mech moving into the smallest cog ie the spring is not strong enough toovercome the friction.

Service the cables, set thge tension and all should be fine.

Do check limit stops too.

The not dropping into the small cog needs to be addressed too - adding tension may help the the shifting down, but not this. I think the cables are gummed up too, and replacement and re setting the mech is in order.
