okay i get the fact that Army Surplus can be a bit naff in the world of MTB clothing but i managed to pick up a Goretex Desert Camo Jacket(from a surplus shop in Darlington) unused for the princely sum of £25.

£25 aint bad for a quality jacket thats gonna keep you dry and should you bin it and it gets ripped youve not lost a fortune.

Now for some Goretex trousers to convert to 3/4`s....

  • I live in ferryhill so might have a look down, I like the camo look anyway I dont like to look like I've just been kicked through evans cycles naked and come out dressed - 25 quid wouldnt even get you a shitey unbreathable unwaterproof jacket from a mtb shop !!

If it's good enough for the army it'll do for me !!

Army surplus do a great line in hardcore CamelBaks. I wouldn't want to re-use the reservoir TBH but if you like the used/abused look, check them out and save yourself some cash.

defo, army surplus each time. MTB clothing and gear is sometimes a rip if bought new season, sales are good though. e.g flood sales. but can't beat the old army ones..

mind you it's hard doing a 400meter climb in 16 hole doc martins ;-)

Join the TA, you get paid, you get all the gucci kit for free and if you wreck it you can just hand it in and get new stuff for nothing!

I've got a Source Vagabond 3L hydration system in temperate DPM from "army surplus" and some Desert DPM shorts as my baggies. Also worth checking out the Norgies for winter layers maybe?

The reservoirs on the army hydration systems are all anti-bacterial so I wouldn't particularly worry about it. They also tend to be very well cared for (as lives depend upon them).

I had an Army "Camo" jacket once.

Put down in the garden, and haven't been able to find it since...

Surplus stuff is good but it often weighs lot's more than commercial stuff. The main exception is the SAS windproof and ventile which is fantastic.
But for bags and that sort of thing Blackhawk, maxpedition and other tactical manufactures can make lots of sense due to modular fittment etc..

Used to be a few Army surplus shops round here, haven't seen one in years though.

What I REALLY want, is a fighter pilot helmet, complete with the pop-down sun visor. For no particular reason other than comedy.
  • They've got a good sense of humour in Darlington.

They got this poor guy to model the SAS windproof smock.

army surplus shops have quality gear at low prices , a thumbs up from me.
as opposed to specific mtb clothing which is the biggest rip off since bottled water.
