May be a silly question, but why put studs on the cycling shoes? I can understand it if your going to be climbing a muddy hill in your shoes but do they help with anything else?

who actually has the studs fitted?

a mate of mine who spd's screwed in two football boot studs in the front of each of his shoes....

we do a fair amount of real mountain riding in the highlands (usually with a pretty drunken bothy night or two thrown in for good measure....), and up there it is not always possible to ride 100% of the time.

The studs help give him some purchase on the very varied terrain our fair land offers.

Yep, just for grip on mud and such, and for kicking people. Of course.

My Spesh BG Comp shoes came with the worst set of studs ever  The stud key fits into 3 slots in a plastic 'washer' around the base of the metal stud, but as soon as you put any torque into the washer, they just slip on the stud, so you can't actually use the key to screw them in. I have to use a pair of pliars instead.
