Tyres for a Trek 5200

Hi,
I recently replaced the tyres on my Trek 5200 - the one's I removed were the original equipment Bontrager Race Lites - they were fine but worn. On general recommendation from threads on here I bought a pair of Continental GP4000 - in the same size as the old Bontragers - 700x25. I'm 89kg so stuck with 25's.
With the Conti's fitted it was immediately apparent that clearance to the frame was reduced to virtually nothing (1or 2mm) - particularly at the bridge across the downtubes under the caliper. Front was much tighter but slightly better. I double checked the tyres and the size was the same.
Are Conti's known to be 'taller' than other brands?
I've now sold the tyres at a loss having covered just less than 200km, and re-fitted the Bontrager's for now.
Would 23's be a better bet? I know the 23 relates to the width but perhaps they may be slightly less tall. Any recommendations - especially from Trek 5200 owners who have changed their tyres for something different?!!

got the 2008 5.2 and just done raid Pyranees on it.
I used Vredestein Fortezza Tri Comps. Superb tyre and no punctures in 2000 miles ( I kid you not).0
