I need extra long vales, I bought "normal" I cant get my pump onto the valve, I believe there are extenders ? Do I need 1 extender per tube ? or do you just put them on and take them off when you have pumped the tube up ?

Gaz - why do you need valve extenders? I thought these were only required when you bought deep rim wheels. You should be ok with long valve or even "extra long valve" tubes. The latter can fit 60mm rims, I think.

Yes, would be cheaper & easier to buy long valve tubes, than valve extenders

or you could use one of those lttle brass preta to schraeder adapters that come with some footpumps

+1 I experimented with valve extenders when I bought my deeprims, they are useless primarily as they won't allow the track pump's pressure gauge to work so you've got no idea of pressure. I use Conti Extra Long valve tubes but I'm running 58mm rims!

That's interesting, I toyed with the idea of valve extenders as I usually buy dirt cheap standard valve tubes from Decathlon, I thought it would be more cost effective to buy extenders but in the end I realised that Decathlon sells fairly long valve tubes anyway.

One problem I have found though is that a lot of long valve tubes on the market don't seem to have any thread on the valve, they have a smooth finish which means my track pump can't get a grip at high pressures and always blows off the valve. Anyone else found this a problem?

I've had no probs with my combo of Conti threadless tubes and Park trackpump. I prefer the smooth finish anyway, I'm sure I've heard that the threaded ones can mess with the rubber seal over time.

Must be my track pump. I have to screw the tubey thing that goes with my mini pump to the valve and then attach my track pump to the tubey thing. It's quite annoying.

Could you put that in layman's terms?

Gaz, how deep are your rims? Also, do you use the nut that slips round the valve and holds it in place? If you remove that you'll have an extra 2mm to play with - though you may also, if the tyre is underinflated, have problems with the valve being pushed back into the tyre when you try and attach the pump.

Definitely buy longer-valved tubes next time though.

I do find smooth sided valves fiddlier than threaded as its harder to get the pump to grip - track pump is a Blackburn Air Tower - maybe thats the problem?

I use one of these http://www.wiggle.co.uk/p/cycle/7/Topeak_Presta_Valve_Extender_Standard/5360036957/ with my deep section rims, it means I can use regular and usually cheaper tubes. I use it with my track pump and the pressure gauge works fine.

Morning peeps, sorry for the dealy but I was traning newbies at work and then last night rode home with noah and his ark :D

I got 4 tubes with "normal" presta valves but the vales only stick out about 2-3mm, not enough to get a track or hand pump into, think my wheels are deep,or double, something or other

Non of the LBS's have 32's with the longer valves, I can pop into Manchester to one of the big chains this evening but was just hoping there would be a way to use these that I already have incase of the "P" word !!!!!!

Gaz - I had that same problem with deep rims & fat tyres - the only fat 700 tubes with valves long enoug to use a track pump on were were bontrager with slime in them & cost about £8 each!

Is there not room even to screw on an old style frame pump hose, or one of those little brass presta to schraeder adapters ?

I've got one of them as well, they're handy to keep in your pack in case you can't get hold of a long valve tube in an emergency.

I've just got the one and screw it on to pump the tube up then take it off and pop it back in my bag.
