So what do you need from your sunglasses?

Impact protection? Check.
Wraparound lens? Check.
UV protection? Check.
Choice of tints? Check.

Came across these yesterday! CAT Digger safety glasses:

They're a perfect fit, and come in different lens shades. I got a pair of yellow and a pair of orange!

And the best bit?

£5 a pair at my local Homebase. Go grab a bargain before they put the price back up!

Not bad, not bad at all.

Aye, they're alright, eh? They're extremely light too!

I've not been out on my bike with them yet, but even just out in the garden the orange lens gives superb definition.
My mate wears DeWalt safety glasses when he's biking and that's what got me thinking. The CATs are actually a nicer shape than his ones and the price is ace! They were £10 or £15 before, but are all £5 in my local store. I'm assuming that it's the same everywhere but can't guarantee it.

    Good luck!

Worth checking out Bolle safety glasses too, lots of variety in their ranges. I have a couple of pairs of theirs, the clear ones are probably my favourite riding glasses

Oh, also Aldi had cycling sunglasses in their sale last week, various tints and styles, they look pretty good.

(UV protection is more or less inevitable in safety glasses- they're almost all made of polycarbonate, which is generally almost completely UV opaque)

I think people are starting to come round to the fact that most cycling glasses are a gigantic ripoff ;)

I looked at the Aldi ones last week. I make spectacles for a living so I know a good frame when I see one and I was unimpressed with them. The CATs are far better quality. Even at £10 they are great value! Who needs Oakleys?

What do you want from a frame? They're comfy enough, decent grippy nosepiece... They look like they're off the NHS mind :)

PS, I thought Disco Stu doesn't advertise

But will they be comfortable about 3-4 hours on the bike?

And I like to have transistion lenses on my glasses when cycling.

    Aha, that old chestnut!

If you like the Aldi ones then fine. Plenty of people on here have them and rate them. I guess I've been spoiled by working with name frames every day. I've got Oakleys myself but they are Juliets rather than the cycling orientated frames. I could get more Oakleys through my work but to be honest the safetys that I've seen have been really good in comparison. I thought I'd give you a heads-up on the CATs as the price was ridiculous!

Beat me to it, was just about to suggest these; dead cheap on eBay.

I've got some ESS Eyepro CDIs that won in a comp. The cost me nothing and are bulletproof, beat that.

  • Not sure if its just my eyes but I find that a lot of cheaper lenses alter my focus which is a bit off putting on technical stuff, my madison d'arcs were £20 and they do it, not much but I can tell, although the clear lense doesnt do it and thats the one I use the most I guess so it's not a major issue - does anybody else find this ?

Ah, I guess I sounded a bit in your face there, didn't mean to be! I'm actually curious, I know some things to look for in good glasses but you obviously know more...

Yeah mate. I Bought a cheap pair in Cyprus a couple of years ago and couldn't step off the curb without falling over  . They made the ground appear to be 6 inches further away than it actually was.

Based on that experience I bought a pair of Oakleys which still distort the depth of view.

Last year I bought a pair of Aldi specials and they're better than the Oakleys in terms of claity of vision and lack of distortion.

Some of the previous Aldi glasses have been great but this last batch are rubbish by comparison - most of the frames are really quite flimsy. I also found the fit was poor although thats very subjective

The biggest difference with more expensive glasses is usually the quality of the optics - sometimes its obvious as soon as you put them on, sometimes its only obvious after wearing them for several hours and developing a headache.

I personally didn't like the Bolle safety glasses - gave them away after using them once.
