Oh FFS can we please have a thread that doesn't go from light hearted self depricating humour from the OP into a troll fest because someone doesn't agree with the whole tone of the thread.

I thought my post was light hearted and self depricating. I draw the line at being called a troll though - I'm much too big to fit under a bridge and not a big fan of goat meat

You needed to put in just one little ;) and we'd have been laughing at it. Most of us commute on road bikes. There's bound to be a bias.

I have a Ridgeback Nemesis, which I consider to be a fast hybrid and I have a Felt Z35 road bike.

I have done about 1200 miles on the hybrid and I also have Schwalbe marathon plus tyres on the bike.

Today I decided to do a 50 miler and I took the Felt over some of the route that I do weekend rides on the hybrid.

To be honest, I didn't notice a great deal of difference in speed and certainly going up a very steep hill I actually think that the hybrid was slightly quicker, maybe there is a lower gear in my 8 speed alfine.

The only thing in defence of my road bike is that I have done less than 200 miles since Nov 08 (including today's run) the thing I can't get to grips with is the drops, I am just used to the flat bar with bar ends so this gives me plenty of hand positions. I think I used the drops once today, I just stuck to keeping my hands on the top and then the side when my wrists hurt.

I know this may sound crazy but I was looking to see if it is possible to get bolt on bar ends for the road bike or maybe aero bars.

I ain't knocking drops, it's just that my neck, shoulders and top of my back where really sore today, possibly just because I don't normally use this range of muscle or something.

I will give the road bike another couple of hundred miles but if still no joy, I think I will sell or swap for a flat bar road bike.

Is there a poll anywhere on the forum on this? My google-foo must be failing me cause I can't find one and 'whaddaya ride to work?' seems like a question that the forum must've answered, sometime...

Oooooh not that I recall! Go post one!

Roadie, SS/FG, hybrid, MTB, folder... there are probably other options too, but don't put too many in. People have to pick one. They have to pledge their allegiance. Yeah.

Fast and hybrid next to each other - I will believe it when I see it.

For the sounds of it sounds you have a too large bike, may be get a shorter stem (although I wouldn't go under 110mm). Check your seatpost, see that your seat is correctly aligned. I have 5 kinds of hand positions I can achieve in my roadie - no pains either!

If you are so desperate you can always swap the road bars for flat bars on your Felt. You will need to change the shifters but I am sure you can find a solution to that.

Thanks for the advice gabriel959, I honestly think that my hybrid is fast, I usually pass a few roadies on my way home from work although maybe it is just a fitness thing.

Ref the Felt, I think that maybe the bike maybe slightly big, when I got the bike the LBS flipped the stem for me so as the bars where closer to me.

Would there be any change out of £200 for a flat bar and shifter brakes and cabling?

Also would the current bar and shifters be worth anything?

    Thanks

Ps, sorry OP for jumping on your thread.

Well, you know what they say – it is not about the bike! I am pretty sure you are fast enough but if you were fitted correctly to your road bike you could be even faster – I overtake effortesly during my journey to work, it is almost fun to see people with flatbars giving it all when there is a headwind doing may be 15mph and I just go blazing past on the hoods :)

I really don’t know what you should do to make it a flat bar (although I know it is possible). Best thing is to head to either Workshop or Buying advice sections of the Road section and ask about it.

You should be able to make some good money out of those shifters (Shimano’s 105 10 speed I would have though you could make up to £120) – not so much the bar but still you should make at least £15-£20 there so that should fund the majority of the swap I would have though.

If the bike is too big though I think the best thing is to sell it and get yourself a new one of the correct size (from a different LBS of course)

Cheers again, I am going to go back to the LBS on Saturday and see if they come up with any suggestions.

If not it looks like I will be posting in the classified section :?

Wanda, I just heard back from some people I forwarded your query to, they said this:
We do have some small bikes with 700c wheels, which is wise to keep choices open as the 650c size offers so little choice in tyres, tubes, wheels, etc. The 48cm Orbea range do offer a short top tube and Scott make very small CR1s around the 50cm top tube area. These are available from £800 plus in reasonable specs and so there should be something to suit. It is always difficult to advise when the rider is not seen though so please take this as blind advice.

    HTH!

LiT thanks for the info. hun. I'll add it to the list of suggestions others made here.

I was doing some research and tried out a Giant Avail (I think) in a 'small' but didn't feel comfortable as the reach for the gears was too much, even with the saddle moved forward. The owner's wife at De Ver cycles suggested the extra small would be better but they didn't have any in stock. It helps that she's my height too so I was happy to take her advice :D

I was thinking of putting it on hold til the new bikes are out in earnest, as some shops seem to be running down their stock til 'new stock' time. Plus, not many seem to carry bikes for short females it seems.

I'm hoping to get over to the Specialized concept store in Ruislip over the weekend to see what their bikes are like, but I'll call ahead first.

Having worked at the London Triathlon this past weekend, I feasted my eyes on some lovely bikes - Specialized appeared to be the number bike brand and it was worth the long days just to see really fit men in their wet suits/running gear (yum yum!)

    Oddjob :P

PS: Was this shop in London? Maybe I could visit it over the weekend.

Another vote for de vere, I bought from there purely on the service, I also now ride with one of the mechanics in my Club.

Get a road bike, you'll really wonder what on earth you were doing on anything else!
