hello i'm looking into getting some clipless pedals i need something thats cheap but strong like the shimano m540s when they were 40 bucks.
o i need something for MTB. now my shoes might have a factor in this, i am making my own they aren't like trail clipless but they aren't as stiff on the bottom as road or mtb shoes i think its plastic.
any suggestions?

i have some M424's and they are more than fine and they wer omly about £30 from CRC, i dont know whether your shoes will have an impact on them (im sure one of the guru's on here will help you with that).0

if you look at merlin cycles, they are doing clipless pedals both with and without cages for dirt cheap. www.merlincycles.co.ukyeehaamcgee wrote:

i think i'm leaning towards the shimano m520 i can get from beyond bikes for 40 bucks.
now because i haven't mounted the part to my shoes yet i can make my shoes to any pedals.
i don't want cages i still would like to have me feet come off when i crash.6' 3" and size 17 shoes(us) only 16 and i ride a trek 4300 07 (got it on 2-7-07) and i have 470 mile on it. with countless scars.0 -

also just to let you guys know that i have size 17 feet so a small pedal isn't best i would think.
yea i'm in the US and some people at the bike store are suggesting the 540 and also the m647 so with the money i have i can only get the 520s unless i ask my parents but out of those three which should i get?
these are store prices
m520- 40 dollars
m540- 80 dollars has a better spindle and bearings
m647-95 dollars better than the 424
also what about the crankbrothers mallet pedals for $105.

The 520s should be plenty strong enough. My pair lasted very well under my 6'2" 300lb frame. However, the reason I sold them and went back to platforms is because the pedal is just too small under a size 12 foot causing a lot of pressure right in the ball.0 -
Hi bigfoot and all,
Hope this helps. I ride a Spesh Stumpy FSR, and it came with crank bros candy pedals. These were my first clipless pedals, used with Specialized Tahoe shoes.
I am a bat fastard. 6'4" and 19.5 stone.
I hated the crank bros pedals. The tahoe shoes are not super stiff for a fat bloke like me, but with very large and funny shaped size 13 feet they are very comfy. However you could feel the pedal right on the ball of your foot and it was very uncomfortable. I hated the amount of float on the crank bros system also, as it seemed to take a really big rotation to release (i know you can flip the cleat to change it, but it never felt right, and I like to be able to release by rotating either way). As a guy with many previously dislocations of knees and ankles I found this horrible. There was also absolutely no bail out option. Fine if you've got skills, bad if you are an arse on a bike like me
In summary: not tried the mallett, but hate the crank clipless system.
So, still loved being clipped (amazing not to have feet bounce of pedals, and also for turning real circles with the cranks, like having an extra pair of legs on long uphills), but wanted a bit more platform to support feet, and the dialable bail out option you get with shimano SPDs.
I bought the m647 DXs and absolutely love them. very comfortable platform for foot, and totally faultless entry/exit from the clip. Brilliant. My advice would be to get those.
For trails that are more technical and I am unsure of, I have welgo MG1s and a pair of 5-10s, but now, more and more, I just stick with my spuds.
Hope this helps. Just to be really clear as I think I totally understand your situation: get the m647 DXs!

That's interesting big_scot_nanny as I had the same experience with the Spesh Taho shoes as you - feeling the pedal on the ball of the foot.0
-
Yeah, but they work great with the DX pedals and they are extremely comfy, even for extended walkies off the bike.
They were what was available when I was buying my bike that didn't look like italian disco slippers (I would reaaaaallly look a tw*t with those on), happy with comfort.
What do you use instead Thermo?0 -
I found the Tahos weren't particularly great on platforms either - especially when they got wet, they just slid all over the place.
I sold them recently because I was getting numb little toes so I think they were a tad too small. Now, I'm riding on platforms with my running shoes. It's really old-school, but the grip is superb and I have none of the foot problems now.
BTW, if anyone is considering switching pedals or shoes, I would recommend having a read of Rivendell Cycle Works' article "The Shoes Ruse" - you may not agree with it, but it has some interesting points to mull over.

Interesting article - will help me . . as I am deciding whether to go clipless or not on my new bike.
May save the pennies, buy some decenmt flat pedals DMR V8s maybe? and then use the money that would have bought shoes and buy some decent hiking boots or something a little more fun?0 -
Size 17?!!!!
I got XT SPDs because....

yea i had corssed out the 520s for one main reason that i was being told is that with size 17 (us) feet that it will hurt and if your having problems with your size feet it might be worst for me even though i weight 195lbs or so.
thanks everyone for your repiles now i am really leaning towards that m6476' 3" and size 17 shoes(us) only 16 and i ride a trek 4300 07 (got it on 2-7-07) and i have 470 mile on it. with countless scars.0 -
The hotspot is more to do with a flexy sole rather than platform size, get some stiff shoes and it should be okay. 520's are £20 at Merlin with free post.0

I've got some Wellgo V8 copies and they are fine. For shoes, the FiveTen Impact seems to be the mutt's nuts with its Stealth S2 sole.0 -
I am about 15 stone and have size 12 feet. I use the M520s (from Merlin, £20) with the MT40 shoe. These are quite stiff and I do not have any problems with pressure on the ball of my feet.
After taking the plunge for clipless, I'm not sure I could go back to flat pedals.0 -
just went clipless today, must say they are amazing to use, had a bloody good ride off road and some on road. was a lil worried about having a timber moment but it never happened
not going to be going back to flat pedals, I can accelerate twice as fast clipped in and go quite a bit fasterFCN: 5/6 Fixed Gear (quite rapid) in normal clothes and clips
