Hi, I'm looking into getting a road bike, also going to use it for commuting to work, which is about 20 miles each way. Its not a flat route, a bit hilly, with some long but not majorly steep sections. (currently using my MTB with road tyres on). FYI its from Warrington to Winsford.

Having looked at a few I was not sure if a triple setup would be better for me than a double? and ideas on that? and 8 or 9 speed.

Also my LBS has a nice Felt F95 Garmin Team Rep in, but having compared it to the Trek 1.2, the Trek seems far better value. Any thoughts? I'm after a bike which will cope with the route well and be fast.

I prefer a triple, I've one weak leg and figured the extra mechanical help would be handy!

If you are used to a MTB, then a triple is an easier change. Well, I thought it was

  • very used to the MTB, but hardly ever use the granny ring, I'm usually in the largest chain ring.

Warrington area is quite flat IIRC so a compact would do just fine!

  • not decided on the triple/double idea yet, but going to have a look at the trek today, seems far better value for money, but will have to see if it seems as good a quality.

IMHO a "normal" double or a compact would easily cope with the terrain in your area - as you say yourself, you hardly ever use the granny ring on your MTB. 8)
