After much deliberation I've narrowed my choice down to these two, any personal experience of either, or both!

Obviously the Boardmans better specced but I can't get over the fact I'll have to buy it from Halfords.

No, I could never buy a bike from Halford's, use your LBS provided there's a good one near you :D

Can't speak for the Boardman but I have an 07 Onix Bira and I can certainly say you won't be disappointed. Frame is made in the same mould as the old Orca but uses a more comfortable weave of CF. Good climber and comfortable for 100 miles+ in a day.

I would go for the Orbea no question but only if you chip in for the 105 instead of Tiagra I think.

Remember you get lifetime warranty with the Orbea :)

Ive just bought the Onix Vuelta special, realy good value with 105 gears, when i collected from shop it had been fitted with a Silla SLK saddle and Ultegra Sl chainset at no extra cost, also the price is only 999 euros here in Spain, which worked out to only 860 pounds. realy good deal.

Man, this is my exact dilemna! Boardman or Orbea? You have good taste. Since I'm split too, I won't leave my vote but I'm keen to see the results. Orbea are just such beautiful bikes, but the Boardmans are all so well specced. Tricky decision, but wither way you'll have an awesome bike :)

Boardman, I've got one and can't fault it. Gets high marks whenever reviewed in magazines.

    Ignore brand/shop snobs.

It is not about brand/shop snobs mate.

It is about Lifetime warranty on an entry level frame - I don't think many companies do this!

Pedigree also might not be important for you, but Orbea have been around for ages and these Onixes are just rebranded Orcas from the 2003-2005 period, yes, the same ones that were ridden in the Tour de France

Go and google reviews for it, it is liked and respected throughout.

Here, here. I recommended the Onix because I have experience of owning one. I have nothing against Boardman bikes and indeed I am currently looking at buying one of the single speed ones. As for Halfords I think its a question of luck. I'm lucky eneough to have an ex Cycle Republic store near me and the staff know what they are on about and I have been offered test rides which is more than some of the so called 'expert' stores I have been in.

Thank you all for voting and opinions.

I don't have an LBS so local support was never an option, unfortunately. Two factors swayed my final purchase, 300 mile round trip, and a wait for ordered bike to Epic, plus lower spec, or, and this was the most deciding factor, 30 mile trip to my 'local' Bikehut and a Boardman Team carbon in stock, available to take away with me that day after a test ride, better spec, bike felt fantastic, aggresive but in my opinion comfortable, initially wary of SRAM but actually very intuitive after a few minutes of use, sold.

In the week of ownership have not been disapointed except for one caveat, suffered the Ritchey loose spoke syndrome after 45miles of riding, bit of a b!tch but not terminal, c'est la vie! Otherwise fine frame and gears, finishing kit is acceptable and front wheel feels fantastic.

IMHO it also looks better, more industrial, more meaningful than the Orbea, possibly not as classically good looking but if titiful fancy was my thing I'd have bought Italian!

Hope I've not disappointed and alienated too many of you,

Not at all, its your money and your descision, Your reason for choosing Boardman is logical enough and if it fits and does what you want then why care what others think.
