Bent rear XT Shadow derailleur! (with pics) Thoughts?

I noticed my rear derailleur looked a little bent, and now I've compared it to a brand new one...it looks even worse.

I've just replaced the mech hanger (that was bent too). However, I cannot see what/where is causing the derailleur bend issue.

My new derailleur is part of a new XT set I've just purchased for a new bike build, so it looks like I'll have to use that on my current bike, and order a new one for the build (just bloody gone up in price too). I never seem to stop having to spend lately! :x

Both of the pics are taken with the new hanger fitted...sorry for the angles of the pics.

  • It's very difficult to tell from those pictures.

Take them both of the bike and lie them side by side on a light background, that might help us play spot the difference.

I think the cage is bent/twisted.

I'vet ried taking some pics, but I can't get seem to get them to represent the problem I see in the flesh.

I don't think that these help. When the derailleur is on the bike, it really does seem to kick outwards away from the wheel. It's obviously not right.

  • If it's the cage, try twisting it back, but make sure you don't bend the hanger, if you do sort it maybe you can have a go at fixing mine......

pop it round to Pauls it could be fixable.

but when you bent the hanger did the mech take a bashing?

Yeah, that's my concern too...bending the new hanger. I've tried to straighten it off the bike, but no such luck.

    Bloody bikes!

I can't recall when I actually bent it...if I'm to be tatally honest, but I reckon that's the case.

At least I can pick one up for £40.00, which is relatively cheap...I suppose! I'll put the new one on the 'Rocky Ridge' and order another for the XC build.

my back wheel slipped off a plank/bridge, whacking my xt shadow and smashing a jockey wheel and proper messing up my gears, i replaced the jockey wheel and tried for ages to straighten it back up and sort of got a full index but they never run the same again.

after that the mech had quite a lot of side play in the pivots and cable tension was critical for gears to work.

ended up getting a xtr rear mech and never had gears so smooth and responsive.

i did the same with a sram x9 rear mech and snapped it clean off at the plastic joint/pivot and was only 2 weeks old, at least with the shimano it is sort of salvageable and not scrap like the sram.
