How many diameters of seatpost do we need?!?

Really keen by the SDG carbon seatpost / bel air SL saddle from Merlin. But on checking my seatpost is 31.4mm, not 31.6mm.

It doesn't appear that SDG even make a 31.4mm seatpost. Why have 2 sizes .2 of a mm apart anyway? Not to mention a 26.8, 27 and 27.2 mm... for roadbikes I assume.

Tempted to get it anyway and sand it down for fit

My seatpost is 27.2. Not just for road bikes.
Why has my sig been removed by the admins???

It would be useful to have some standardisation, but many frames tubes are finely hones for the correct charecteristics the designer wants. Maybe 5 or 6 sizes would do.

Would think it difficult to shim a 31.6mm post into a 31.4mm frame...

And we're talking a fifth of a mm here, less than half as thick as one of those mechanical pencil leads :D

    What?

you would use one of the smaller sizes like 27.2mm 30.9mm

    i dont see the problem.

Sorry, I'm being dense. The deal only applys to the 31.6mm size, or rather I should say applied cos I just checked and it's gone. No more problem !

It was a good deal though, I-beam carbon post and saddle for £54.95, the post by itself is £75 at Chain Reaction, and the saddle £50.

They still have the alloy version for £29.95 if anybody's interested:
