The Transandes Challenge 2010 is an unique mountain bike race, located in the heart of the stunning Patagonian Andes Mountains between Chile and Argentina
The TransAndes Challenge is unquestionably a test of physical strength and mental determination. (For elite racers and for amateurs racers you can raced at your own pace).
There will be a maximum of 400 teams who, if they choose to accept the challenge, will race on single-tracks, jeep roads and technical terrain. The six stages will ride from 60 to 100 kilometers per day. And we will go through 6 amazing Volcanos, and 10 incredibles lakes in the heart of Andes Mountains.
The race will take place from January 25th to January 30th of 2010.
The TransAndes Challenge is open to eight categories: Open Men; Open Mixed; 60+ (combined age) Men; 60+ Mixed; 80+ Men; 80+ Mixed and 100+ Mixed. The minimum age for participation is 18. The riders of each team must remain together at all times during the race. If, at any point, riders separate by more than one minute the team will receive a penalty.
Most of the six stages will begin at 10:00 am with the exception of the first and last days, which typically begin late morning. Riders are expected to reach the finish line by 6:00 pm daily. The stages will include breakfast and dinner, and on stage six there will be a dinner for all participants, which will be a traditional Chilean barbecue.
After the final stage, team times will be calculated to determine the overall winners of each category.
The TransAndes Challenge is organized as a wilderness mountain bike race, where participants sleep in tent villages that are set up prior to their arrival and broken down immediately after the start each morning. Participants will experience a temperamental mountain climate and the extreme physical challenges that come with racing the Andes.
The TransAndes Challenge is similar to the format of both the TransAlp Challenge from Mittenwald, Germany to Riva del Garda, Italy and the TransRockies Challenge from Panorama, BC to Fernie, BC.
