Very much. "Building" it on to the rear hub consists of sliding it on and tightening the lockring. You could buy the tools and cassette for a lot less than £70 and do it yourself - it's a piece of p1ss.

I think he means wheel-building it, from his old wheelset, using his current Deore hub, onto his current rim.

    Hercule Q, you tried Merlin??

You can get a full Shimano Deore wheelset for £79.99!!!

spoke to the cycle shop on the otherside of town he said he can do the wheel, true and replace the couple of bent spokes in the front wheel and replace my bottom bracket for less than that

so a deore rear hub, a new bb and spokes and labour for £60 i know where i'm taking it

Duuurrrrrr - oh yeah  How the hell did i read cassette instead of hub??? My apologies :?

Still quite pricey though - like you say a wheelset is only £80. A wheel build round here is usually about £40 at an lbs.

Why don't you remove the rotor and cassette, and dismantle the old wheel carefully. Take in the rim and ask them to build it onto a new hub.

    Deore rear hub £25
    Spokes if needed £20
Unbuild wheel to preserve rim £10
    Wheel build £15

Merlin: dunno how they do it for the price

£15 for a wheel build and dish? That's a bit low, it's going to take the best part of an hour, my lbs is on £30 an hour labour.

Merlin can do you an XT hub on XC717 rim for £77, Deore on 317 is only £53. They do great builds. SO against these prices I would go down the Merlin route.

Often a little cheaper if you buy a few parts. If you took your own parts in I would charge more.

Super I agree with that, but at the end of the day, you've still got to make enough money to cover your running costs!

Seems to be standard practice lol. Maybe not on a deore hub - I have seen some places build free.

I don't think the LBS price is a rip off, their costs and overheads will be greater than the likes of Merlin, but Merlin will give you all new parts and a great build for the same or less depending on spec. Depends on the degree to which you want to support your LBS I guess.

merlin normally don't use the newest hubs though... That said i really rate their wheels, having had a few set now. However I now build my own.

I still use Merlin, cheaper than I can source the parts for! I got a pair of deore hubs on FIR Rims (great quality) with ACI DB spokes for 50 quid.

Mind you I just got those cyprus wheels from WHS.

Super are you still working in the trade?

I don't use merlin partly because I like building my own, but mainly because i'm a massive tart and they don't do white wheels, or baby blue ones. Which are the next two set's i need to build.

I always get my wheels built by my LBS, they make some amazingly solid wheels.
Idon't doubt Merlin at all, but I've always gone by the adage of "if you're lucky enough to find a great wheel builder, then make friends with him".

You missed the last part of that saying out!

''If you're lucky enough to find a great wheelbuilder, then make friends with him...
...Get him to teach you how to properly build wheels, then befriend him, and build / tweak your own!''

Or how about this wheel, £77 if you use a voucher.

Couldn't believe the price when i saw it.
The trouble with having an open mind, of course, is that people will insist on coming along and trying to put things in it.

Sounds pretty reasonable to dismantle a wheel and build it into another.

But then you can get a complete brand new pair of Mavic Crossrides for £135 form CRC at the mo (Linky). I know what I'd be doing,,,

You can get a non disc rim on a disc hub to allow for later upgrades.
