a mountain biker friend has just asked me and I dont know...

1) UCI and Tradition.. simply dont want them.
2) safety(?) sharp/hot/dangerous because you can stop too fast?

any ideas for the reason behind the ban?

thanks

Somebody once crashed and a rotor ended up in an eight-year-old girl's head.

I hear they're thinking of bringing them back though.

They're only banned from elite / World Cup events but apparently it's under review. I don't think you'll find a problem at your local league events. The reason was on safety grounds if crashing into other riders / spectators.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..

Where is the logic in that, as disc brakes are allowed in UCI MTB races, aren't they?

What makes them more dangerous when crashing than other types of brakes?

The sharp spinning metal disk which can easily take off appendages is pretty dangerous to be honest...
