I've just started to use tubs & plan to use for long TTs (100m/12hr).

Heard from a number of people they are less likely to puncture but still a risk.

So I've bought some Vittoria Pit Stop and carry this with me on rides. Luckily not had occasion to use it yet.

Found some reviews online, most comprehensive being this one
http://www.bikesportmichigan.com/reviews/Vittoria-Pit-Stop.shtml

which seems to be pretty positive.

Wondered if anyone here has used it (or alternative)

I've used it once (only ever punctured once on tubs). I laughed at the bit in the review about being difficult to misuse as I ended up with a tyre at about 60 psi, so clearly I didn't get a good enough connection with the valve. However, I expect you'll be carrying a mini pump, so it shouldn't be a problem. It did hold for a day or so before going flat, so certainly good enough for a get me home.

Thanks. Yes planned on belts and braces approach of carrying a pump as well.

It works well for small punctures although as has been said a CO2 cannister or pump as well makes sense.

After putting PitStop in the tubular I rotate the puncture to the bottom of the wheel to get the sealant where it's needed and normally wait 3 mins or so to get a good seal. If it's a large cut, put your thumb over it to retain pressure and sealant whilst it sets.

I'd still be a little nervous if PitStop is your only support on a 100 mile or 12 hour compeitive ride and would probably carry a Vittoria Crono CS in my pocket just in case.

Should mention that when I put the sealant in I gave the wheel a good spin to try and force the sealant to the outer of the tube where the puncture was.
  • Puncture in front tub this am.

Used pit stop to get it to 50psi, and lezyned the rest to get me home - then track pump 120psi. Seems to be still holding - the cut was a small piece of glass I had to fish out for the tyre to stop deflating.

Can't believe it, got a puncture in rear tub this evening, and emptied the rest of the Pit stop can into the rear (less of the can left) , then pumped up to 60ish to get me to my detination. Needed a bit more air an hour later, but holding.

So in short, seems to work, and I need another can. But I have a spare tub and pump just incase.

Thanks, sounds quite reassuring,,touching lots of wood yet to have my first tub puncture.

Like you carry a can + spare just in case. Use tubs mainly for TT and have found that the XLabs rear bottle holder is pretty good for storing these + bottles for long events.

There is also Stans and Tufo sealants. The Tufo only works on butyl tube but is pretty effective IME - they now do an 'extra' grade for bigger cuts. I ran a Tufo tub with a sealed puncture for over a year without any problems. I've carrying a can of Pitstop in my back pocket during races for about 3 years but luckily never had reason to use it!
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..

I've heard of these. How do you use them?

Do you put them into the tub in advance so, hopefully, they will self seal if you hit something?

Both the Tufo and Stans you put inside the tube as a liquid - it's like a latex sealant that solidifies on contact with air. Getting into the tyre itself can be a bit tricky/messy - unscrew the valve core and then use an old syringe body as a funnel works IME - once in there you don't really notice.

Thanks for this, I'll try it out. Do you recommend any particular brand/type of tub?
