Hello all. Need to replace my headset on my 09 spesh hopper. going to get my LBS to do it as i dont have a press, but i want to supply the kit. Only trouble is i cant find a headset with the same stack height as the original one fitted. Is this a problem or am i over complicating things??

TBH i would have asked the LBS to have got it in for me.

but it looks like you have a few spacers to play with.

Over complicating things. Thus add or remove spacers as necessary

Cheers. Thought i was making a meal of it. just needed conformation.
If the lower bearing set is taller than original, wont that affect the amount of steerer tube space free at the top? only ask because even though the bike is standard except for a Race Face stem and bars i dont seem to have a lot of steerer tube to play with. My stem is at the top with about 15mm of spacers below, none above.

15 mm of spacers below is plenty of room. I've nevr in my life seen a discrepancy of 15mm in the stack heights of two headsets.

Incidentally, it would probably be best to buy the headset from the same shop that's going to fit it. They usually charge less for fitting stuff you bought off them.

What was wrong with the old headset?

My 09 Rockhopper has a creaky headset - I was wondering if maybe it just needs a clean and re-grease - or is the stock headset just cheap and crappy?

Yeah I figured that's got to be worth a try in any case. A fun job for the forthcoming wet weekend... ;-)

When i fitted my Race Face stem a while back i over tightend the top cap bolt. As time gone on the rubberized top seal/cover on the headset has deformed an split. The headset fine in itself, just without the top seal/cover the upper bearing is totally exposed and only a matter of time before it fails. Put a thread on here the other day about trying to get hold of a seal individually but sh*t out on that. So just going to replace it.
