Best value 26" slickish tyres?

In order to throw on the super-ugly MTB! I'm tempted by pink and green Halo tyres but that'll set me back a good £50, so best not - the frame is gaudy enough as it is...

(this, btw: http://bristol.gumtree.com/bristol/26/41607726.html)

So anyway, I'd like to spend as little as possible, without ending up with tyres that will give Ms P*ncture Fairy a field day. All I want to do is thrash this bike in and out of town - it's possible I might try and take it into some woods, but not enough that I'll need knobblies.

Suggestions?

I have had these on my MTB for 3 years and think they are superb. They are "access all areas" and have done me for commuting, canals, MTB trails, and even a little mud (but not much). No puntures and a couple of thousand miles. These are for me the Dogs Choppers of tyres.

  • I would proberly go for any cheap tyres you want with the tread pattern you want, then put something like slime tube protectors in them @ about £6 each
  • If you need good puncture protection and don't care about weight then Spa Cycles have Marathon Plus tyres for £19 each.
    Come in 26x1.75 and 26x1.35.

Aye aye, cheap and nasty is the plan, but I don't want to find myself forever repairing p*nctures on a cheap and nasty bike, would like to stick some tyres on and forget them. So might be worth spending £20 on 'em. Couple of new tubes from Tesco. Badabing, badaboom.

Like, I decided to drive to one or two things last week because I wasn't sure about leaving the bike (depends which area of Bristol I head to and how busy it is), so it'd be good to have a crappy hack for that sort of thing. I did have one, but had no space for it indoors, so chained it outside with a cheap lock - didn't take long to get it nicked...

I have city jets on my mtb as well. I picked them up cheap in bike-uk in clifton for something like £20 for the pair.

Well I have a pair of these that i no use for (don't own a bike with 26" wheels)

They were given to me but apparently they are fairly good tires.

You're more than welcome to them if you're willing to cover the postage, have no idea how much that would be? :?

amnezia - sounds like a very generous deal to me! It'll be a week or so before I get my hands on said bike, but then I'd love to take them off your hands for the postage, whatever that may be :)

    I imagine you ain't a yokel?

I'd agree that they're pretty good- standard fit on my Cadenza, still got one on the back (front got a slow puncture, Marathon on there with another waiting for when the rear's done.) Pretty quick, OK in the wet, and tough enough for a commute. They do seem to do a good job of picking up fragments from the road, but they're certainly not fragile by any means. Saw a good deal on Marathons, but I'd happily use Sport Contacts again.

Have used Schwalbe City Jet 1.5s for a couple of years commuting on my rigid MTB. Good wet and dry (and even snow), they roll and corner well and don't wear too quick. They have fended off all but the sharpest intrusions thanks to a puncture-resistant belt that doesn't spoil the ride.

You can easily pick them for around £20, either on ebay or the usual online shops. I bought mine hassle-free from this seller).
Aspire not to have more, but to be more.
