Background

Cycling in bedgebury a week on saturday, great single track by the way, and went up a short steep climb and didn't change gear quick enough so did a classic clipless fall to the side and landed on my hip against a log - ouch!

Whats the problem

Well my hip now is swollen (looks like a big love handle) very sore and not getting smaller after a week. Been to the doctor but he said it is normal after a fall as it blood under the skin. There is no bruise just swelling.

Any body else had the same problem? or had any embarressing swelling that just will not go down?

  • Jumped over a fence but was in two minds how to do it. So below the knee was pointing back towards the fence and everything above the knee pointing 180 degrees away from the fence.

Limped to the girlfriends who started crying when she saw it. But then just went out to get totally drunk with my mates for just having finished our last exam of the year at uni. Mum saw it the next day and screamed. Doctor gave me a bollocking for not having immediately gone to the hospital. X-rays were useless due to the swelling. Physical testing and manipulation useless due to swelling. Swelling bigger than my thighs.

Swelling lasted 3 months. Leg in a splint for 6 months. Stretch marks around the knee - permanent. After a few months of swelling they start talking about trying to do something about the swelling.

So a few weeks of swelling is peanuts mate so dont stress it and enjoy milking the tlc from the gf ;)

Are you putting any ice on it a few times day (or a cold pack from the freezer)?
  • Careful with the ice, wrap it in a tea towel first it's too cold for your skin.

Bags of frozen peas are better as they mould to your shape.
