New cassette

I've got a 09 Rockhopper Comp and it needs a new cassette, it's currently got an HG50 with a new KMC x9l silver chain to go on it.

I want to upgrade the cassette at the same time, I've seen good deals for the shimano xt 770 but that seems to indicate it won't work with chains other than a HG 'super narrow' chain. Can anyone give me some recommendations, I'm looking to spend about £40 and want it to be 1/2 decent!

Could I put a good SRAM 9 speed cassette on the back?

Cheers

your chain is 9spd, the XT cassette is 9spd they will work.

No problem with either an XT or SRAM cassette - I'd go for whichever you can get the best deal on!

Make sure you check ware rate on the chain too, as usually a worn out cassette can mean a worn out chain too and vice versa.

Also using a semi-worn out chain on a new cassette can lead to poor shifting and increased ware rate.
  • Cheers all, I ordered an XT earlier.

The chain is 30miles old, I checked it before I replaced it and it was only at .75 but the amount the chain slipped all over the place during those 30 miles it must be the cassette. Probably serves me right for not cleaning her as often as I should have.
