Just out of curiosity, my water bottle tops get quite mucky in the wet and dusty in the dry. I try to give em a squirt and a wipe before drinking but I wonder if there are all kinds of lurgees hanging about on 'em. Oh I'm so sensitive I know but I nearly rolled over the rotting carcass of a fox 'tother day in the rain. All that run off was splashing over me and me botter watles (no muddies). But hey, I suppose if I'm still here typing, kind of ...
I may be a minority of one but that doesn't prevent me from being right.

Most of the time i take my camelbak so dont have that problem, i always have a bottle of water on the bike tho'. I have often drank from my bottle when its been covered in dirt / water / dust / mud etc and its done me no harm - obviously i give the bottle top a wipe before i drink from it.

    Just get on and drink!
  • I have to say I'm rather partial to the drinking from the odd puddle ever now and then! You just can't beat the grittiness of it!

You're probably better off drinking road scum than liquid sheep poo!

We had sixteen families sharing a puddle. If we were lucky, on Sundays we got t' lick t' dew off nettles as a special treat.

If the anti-bacterial properties of your lipstick aren't enough, just dust 'em off with the tassles on your handlebars.

I have to say that this never occurred to me. I have something like these on my bike:

Guess that might save you the cleaning process?

It's a fair question - basically if you allow road water into your body you're increasing the risk of lurginess. You've thought about what's in it, and there'll be more besides. What can you do apart from give it a wipe?

Increased exposure to things like road water is actually more likely to decrease the amount of times you get ill as it should cause your immune system to develop and become a lot better!

You take drinks with you on rides??? But thats like 1, possibly 1.5, additional kilos of weight!

You know, if you want to avoid contamination of the fluids you imbibe, there's a liquid the human body produces which comes out totally sterile. It also kind of looks like energy drink.

This is what my dad used to do when he was out on long training runs for marathons. That or go out in the car beforehand and hide a water bottle under a bridge somewhere.

aye, just drink it, you'll be right....However, i would advise checking the top of your water bottle before slurpage, as i almost downed a dead slug once. It was like having a chunk of soap in my mouth......... :?
