I don't feel like going uphill at 10-12 mph is a pootle! Because I'm putting as much (if not more) effort into doing that that I am going 20ish mph on flat.

Most of mu commute is uphill, so I don't feel like I'm ever pootling - probably would, if I could!

Lots. My hands are on the tops of the bars much of time.

Unless the wife says "you need to be home on time tonight" and I'm late. In which case, it's balls out. Safely, of course. :)
Of course, what he fails to mention is that his pootle is usually around 25mph! ;)

As I found out to my peril on Sunday. CJCP spent much of the morning talking to himself, not realising I was 100m behind

I seem to go as fast as I can. In fact I'm glad this point has been raised because I've been wondering about my sanity recently, I've been feeling quite tired off the bike over the last day or so and have intended to take it easy, but things soon change when I'm back on it, I just can't help myself.

It's all relative of course, my "going for it" would be considered a pootle by many on here.

I think they call it "tempo"
It's not a flat out charge trying to go as fast as I can manage, and it's not a pottle, which I just can't stick to when I'm on my own. It's a trying-but-still-comfortable pace thats a couple of kph's down on the flat out speed.

I tried cruising, and it hurt by bottom, not to mention my back, and my wrists.

Went on a family pootle on my road bike (hybrid in the lbs for fixing),

2 hours of mostly freewheeling shows up just how much weight you take through your legs when you're pedalling.

I usually cruise if there is nobody in front (I find it easier being the greyhound than the rabbit). If I have passed anyone I *obviously* need to keep going...

Rarely do I push myself all the way to work - maybe I should and see if that improves my fitness.

Today was good though, average speed of 20mph in to work today, including traffic lights etc, mainly because I tried on the uphill parts.

I pootle, but don't "cruise" in the rain and a headwind.

I cruise up to red lights in primary, which really annoys motorists who obviously need the 30 stationary seconds to compose and send a vital text message.

Not just me that does this then. As soon as I see the traffic queuing then I stop pedalling and start rolling and try to get to the ASL just as the lights change.
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.

I *try* to ride at a more leisurely pace at times, when it's ridiculously hot (eg. when I'm dripping with sweat just from wheeling the bike out the house) or when I've got dead legs after a busy weekend, or when I've got a headwind on the way home after a long tiring day.

But it usually lasts five minutes though then I forget and start hammering the pedals again :D

Depends on your definition of flat out. My cruise could interpreted I'm sure by others as flat out.

What he said. But the other way round.
