Used L&S rather than ITV4 in case people can go back further in time.....

Noticed the different pronunciations between channels... i wonder which are right (if either!)

Jens Voigt
- L&S "Voyt"
- Eurosport "Vohkt" (with a bit of a rasp to it)

Thor Hushovd
- L&S "Hooshoft"
- Eurosport "Oozoff"

Any others?

I heard Gary Imlach pronounce Yauheni (as in Hutarovich) as "Evgeni" on tonight's ITV highlight show. At first, I was like "wtf?", but thinking about it, he's probably right. After all, Serhiy Honchar was pronounced "Serguei Gontchar".

So good on Imlach for getting that right. It would never even have occurred to me otherwise.

Serhiy Honchar was pronounced "Serguei Gontchar".
Apparently the Serhiy Honchar spelling came about because the Ukrainian govt changed the translation of the cyrillic letters away from the Russian translation, and once it was on his passport that was it. The man himself says it should be spelled with a G.

Translation of spelling between cyrillic and roman letters depends on both the original and target language.

Voigt should be pronounced as "fought".
  • How about Moncoutie - or the L&S version Moncouteeyay?
