Advice on new rims/wheels

Unfortunatley Ive had a minor accident involving me, my bike, a sharp corner, greasy surface & a car.
Luckily Ive only got a few custs and bruises and my bike is mostly ok, no bad scratches however the back wheel is well buckled.
So now I need a new back wheel/rim. My bike came with Alex Rim DP17's from having a quick scout around net these are no longer available so Im looking for new wheel. As Im buying I may aswell upgrade and buy a better set however I havent really got a clue where to start. Im hoping to keep costs down as much as poss.
Any suggestions or advice is as always muchly appreciated, colourwise Im wanting black or even white, size 26"
Cheers
Ps - the car came off the worse by far, which im quite proud of

On a budget, Deore hub and Mavic XM317 rim.0
-
Thanks SS, will look these up. Nice to see you back, hope you enjoyed your Jolliebobs?
Do I buy these hubs - rims separate or should I be able to buy them together as a wheelset? Are they better than my existing?
Will these rims be ok with my existing shimano m495 centre lock hubs?
cheersBoardman Hybrid Pro

Buy as a built wheel - 50 quid at Merlin. Make sure you get centrlock though!
You could get the old hub rebuilt onto a new rim. Usually costs more though.0 -

ok, excellent advice, muchly appreciated. If I go for these can I just check they are better than my existing wheels? As I know not a lot about components just want to make sure Im doing my bike riding justice.Boardman Hybrid Pro

Yep, handbuilt, and with better spokes.0

Ok had a look at Merlin and saw the following

The 717's appear ready built to dispatch and theres a 8 day wait for the 317's. Are the 717's worth the extra? As Im needing them asap I dont mind paying the extra, what do you think SS? They are both centrelocks Im looking at arent they?Boardman Hybrid Pro

Not if it says 6 bolt fitting ;-)
717 are lighter by 40g, and better made.0 -

Im learning fast. Not. Would you be so kind as to post a link of what I should be looking at from merlin as I can only see 6 bolt thingies not centre locksBoardman Hybrid Pro

I can't, as they have drop down menus lol. You need to look for the centrlock fitting hubs. If they have them!!! They should have. Other places will ie CRC.0

have a beer.
I honestly cant believe the damage done to the car, massive dent in the passenger wing, huge gouge the full length of the front passenger door off me bars, dent in rear passenger door of me heed. Quite lucky I only hit the side tbh else if i hadnt of swerved would of been a head on and I problies would be still somewhere in the stratosphere
I know im going to be sore the morn, could be a sickyBoardman Hybrid Pro

Ok the morning after the night before Ive got my head on and Im hoping these will do the job.
Front - Deore M535 centrlock
Mavic XM317'S 32h
DT Champion PG spokes
Rear - Deore M535 centrelock
Mavic XM317 32h
DT Champion PG spokes
Just a question before I order...........
Presuming these are ok, when I receive them is it just a case of adding my existing cassette & disc rotors. Bikes only 6 weeks old?
Ordering from CRC should I be ok with these or should I upgrade spokes, nipples or isnt it worth it with me been a novice?
cheersBoardman Hybrid Pro

Yep, just swap the old parts over. Might have to readjust brakes and gears.
I would go for double butted spokes over plain guage.0 -
No probs got the DB's added. Hopefully even I can manage ading the rotors & casstte.
Should I just let them use their standard Nipples or should I upgrade to the brass lock ones for £4.99 pw ? Is there much difference?
Its a good job people round here no their onions else I'd be goosedBoardman Hybrid Pro

Have a look at these £77 for a front one if you use the £5 voucher and tbh are a bargain.

Cheers for the heads up Dazzza, they out of my price range unfortunatley. I wasnt budgeting to replace the wheels so soon after buying but its my own fault.
Ive only got upto £130 to play with for front & rear, not much I know but Im happy if they are an improvement on the DP17's the bike came with.Boardman Hybrid Pro

Well dp17's are on mtbr, they are what came with my anthem and on there they have a very bad rep for breaking, fine for gentle stuff but start to push and they give up.

But the ones you've chosen would be far better anyway, i just thought id throw in a bargain. 8)The trouble with having an open mind, of course, is that people will insist on coming along and trying to put things in it.

Depends on your riding ability, mtbr is rarely wrong when it comes to reviews.
I refused to have them on my bike because they do indeed weigh a ton, pick up a decent set and you'll see.The trouble with having an open mind, of course, is that people will insist on coming along and trying to put things in it.

As a novice I new the dp17 werent the best in the world but didnt find them really heavy, hopefully the mavic317 will be like floating on air then
Perhaps its a good thing I nearly got killed to encourage me to buy new wheels . lolBoardman Hybrid Pro

Lol well i broke the hope hub on my xc717's so it can happen to any rim they all have a breaking point.
But you will see the difference when you ride with them, it'll be quite noticeable. The trouble with having an open mind, of course, is that people will insist on coming along and trying to put things in it.

Ive just ordered them through CRC, hopefully receive em within a week.
Now what tools do I need to add the cassette & rotors? :oops:Boardman Hybrid Pro
Planet X XLS0 -
Rotors a t25 torx bit and for the cassette a hyperglide splined removal tool and a chain whip.

From spending a few mins (hours) lurking around the Shimano website I think I need
For the cs-hg50 cassette
http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Mode ... delID=1056
For the centrelock rotors a tl-lr15 or tl-lr10 tool what ever they areBoardman Hybrid Pro
