hey all

was just wondering, since my cycle to work (MTB) is approx 3 miles it doesn't really get you going unless of course I trreat it like some kind of sprint training...but am never in a hurry to get to work. So I was thinking does anyone take a long way to work just for the hell of it?

If my commute was that sort of distance (its 12miles) I'd probably extend it. Based on the fact that the minimum 12miles is already extended a lot on the way home quite often. : :D

My commute is 2 miles, but I never go the long way to work. Got kids to chivvy along and get ready for school. However, sometimes I go the long way home - I've a straight out-and-back route which is 20 miles.

I usually commute 14 miles each way.
Monday morning I made it 67 miles on my way to the office.
So yes, I do occasionally extend it.

I don't extend it on he way in to work, I coudn't face extra miles and then a days work, but then it's 22 miles anyway. I have been known to extend it on the way home to add another 20 miles or so and a few hills

I am too lazy in the morning and never extend my 7.5 miles.
However on way home have done up to 45 miles, and that is on a MTB, so takes an age!!
Normally I do 15 on way home and include a pleasant ferry trip, but that costs £1.20!!

One day I will break the 10 miles for the way in, but probably not till I get a new bike - See What Cyclo Cross Bike post.

My office is 20 yards away yet me and Mrs Matt alternately cycle 12.5 miles before work every day (the other one looks after the baby!).

My commute is 5 miles but most days I add another 2 or 3 miles to each legg. I do on the way home some times push up to around 20 -25 miles.

Nope. I can't face it in the morning, and in the evening I just want to get home. Very very seldom I might ride somewhere on the way home, if the weather's nice and I'm in a good mood and the stars are aligned just so.

I add on the miles in the evening, between 4 and 14. My body can't face it in the morning.

i have a few routes for commuting to/from work but they are only a couple of mile different between them. choose different route depending on the mood and the traffic at the time. :)
planning a new route to add into the mix at the moment and hopefully this one will extend abit longer than the others.

16 miles each way - I almost always come straight home to get back to the family, but in the morning when the kids are still asleep I'll generally add an extra mile or two just to follow a nicer route. And if the kids are staying with Grandma I try for 27 miles both ways, rain allowing.

I had to this morning. Realised I'd forgotton to put something important in my bag so had to go back home again. Normally that would annoy me, especially as it was raining, but with the competition of the SC stats thread iI didn't mind. Every mile is valuable

    Same for me.

Except - I *could* do the straight, straight run into work - it's all road and one section is a little scary... well okay SEVERAL sections are a little scary. It would be quicker but frankly i prefer the quieter and safe option.

So I guess I take the longer way every day. Which contradicts my first comment.

    Arse.

My "normal" commute is about 6 miles, plus 40 mins on a train plus 3 miles on the other end. Having been left frustrated lately by a string of "nearly" finishes at the crits I've decided that I should stop being so lazy and do some proper training.

So last week I extended my commute in the evenings by 13miles by cycling from the office to a train station halfway along the route. This week (except today, a bit of rest for tomorrow night) I rode the extra distance both ways. For me a good bike ride is one of the few things I can face early in the morning!

It's been pretty good, and I've enjoyed it plenty. Plus, there is quite a feeling of satisfaction riding over the clogged M25... :)

My shortest route is around 4 miles but I usually do 9.5 miles in (occasionally 14.5) and between 5 and 9 miles home but should do more really.

My shortest route is 29 miles, needless to say that's enough :) although now I've started on my new Defy I might tag in a couple more on some quieter roads - it knocked 25 minutes off my time. It was hard work on the Rockhopper - I was just glad to get there.

I actually drive further away from home then cycle (off road) to work.

For three miles i'd take the long way in, maybe up to 5-10miles. Then a much longer way home.

I used to do 17.5miles to work on my mtb (just over an hour) then take the long way home which was usually around 3-4 hours. I guess i should extend my commute in to work at the moment, but I really don't fancy it in the mornings.

I would however suggest that maybe sticking to the short way in so you can stay in bed is a good plan! Then go for a mahoosive ride home!
