A rather noob question

How do cleats (?) work? I know they stop you slipping from the pedals but how do you release yourself from them?

I am thinking I should invest in some proper shoes and pedals, as I am doing around 26miles a day, only issue is I am on a very very very tight budget, they will be mainly be used for the commute to work so they need to be comfortable.

What set do you guys recommend?

you generally twist your foot to release.

it does depend on the system you buy though.

The SM-SH56 multi-release cleats are very good. They can be released by twisting in any direction and they will (with considerable force) release in an upwards direction. Recommended.
