Can anyone recommend a good base for a week's stay in Norfolk for me the wife and an 11 year old ? Hope to include cycling day rides and beach days maybe combining the two .

Looking to stay in a nice village / small town with a pub and few shops . Probably self catering but will consider hotel .

Any pointers/ recommendations ?

I've just booked two nights here http://www.hempsteadhall.co.uk/index.html next month(not been before so can't comment further). Will have to pretend you kid is over 12!
Looks comfortable, handy for pubs, etc in Holt and coast etc is easily reachable.
The problem you may have is availibility given popularity of UK hols this year.
Found the above in http://www.farmstay.co.uk/ which I've used a couple of times.
Let us know how you get on.

There's a very good YHA hostel at Wells-by-the-Sea on the North Norfolk coast, also one down the road at Sheringham. Some nice beaches and coastal walks nearby, cycling too, although I was off-across the top on the bike and didn't wander much . Several good pubs and a tearoom within walking distance of the Wells hostel, they also have alot of info on the local area.

/edit Sorry, the very good hostel was an independent at Burnham Deepdale "Deepdale Backpackers Hostel", not Wells-by-the-Sea YHA one which I've not tried. Thinking of heading that way this weekend and just looked at a map (having a punt at 'The Chalke Way').
