2004 XT Crankset & new XT middle ring

I sold a friend my old Hollowtech 1 XT crank from 2004 a while back, he needed to replace the middle ring so bought an XT middle ring.
Trouble is it doesn't fit, the part that sticks out & sits flush to the spider is just too short. I'm sure I have read on here about someone else with the same issue & the solution was to file the ring a little bit but I'm loathed to do this until I'm sure that's the solution.
Or is it a case of send it back & get a different ring?
He seems to have bought the 761 ring instead of the 760 which I think this crank set needs.
Here's a picture so you can see where it's fouling, I can get two of these bits to line up but the last two are slightly out.
Is it worth filing a slight amount of material away from each 'leg' ? Or will that pull it slightly out of position ?

file it."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."
