HI - about to change my Record bottom bracket with like for like, but wondering what grease to put with new one. Heard that Loctite is good or any others? thanks

Do locktite make grease? I thought they only did superglue and threadlock!

I tend to use seriously purple grease, seems to work. A little copperslip is best as it is designed for static applications.

I presume you mean for your BB threads? I'd use an anti-seize or assembly compound rather than grease as it is a static application. For English threads Copaslip is OK, but for Italian I'd use a medium grade Loctite to prevent the drive-side cup from coming undone. As for greasing the tapers - this debate has raged longer and more fervently than the Shimano vs Campagnolo debate!

Sorry, I should have clarified are you fitting a separate BB or an external BB Ultratorque unit? The tapers are the square ends of the spindle on a separate BB unit over which each crank arm fits. The taper relies on the wedge-effect of the tightened bolt to force the soft aluminium up the steel spindle - over-tightening, which could be attributed to greasing the tapers has been reputed to lead to accelerated failure of the cranks.

It's a separate BB Monty, square tapered 2003 Record. Thanks for that excellent explanation.

Any kind of synthetic grease will do the job...

If you can lay your hands on aero grade hylomar sq32 it's very good as it never dries out.
