specailized allez triple upgrading

hi all, i own a specialized triple 07 the reason i purchased a triple is my age , mid 40's and hills were i live .now that my fitness levels have greatly improved over the past 2 years im looking at moving up to a double but im a bit scared of not having that last crank to fall back on a steepish hills.
someone did mentioned a compact 10 speed saying i wont miss it as it offers nr the same gearing and im wondering if to make the change or not.
i have looked at a specialized sport - elite - roubaix or even a tarmac but im worried of not having that final gear to drop back on on those tough hills even though i less and less use the very lowest gears.
or should i just invest in a good quality groupset and be done ?.
any advise would be greatly appriciated.
